During this project we have been tasked with learning 3 songs in mini- ensembles of up to three people, at the end of the project we will be performing in front of one school. The group I have been placed in for this project includes three people; Niall Small (guitar), Millie Lohan (vocals) and Myself (piano). The songs we have each chosen to perform include; comethru (Jeremy Zucker), Happier (Olivia Rodrigo) and Love yourself (Justin Bieber). As we are performing in front of children we had to be very careful when choosing songs, this it is not professional or moral to expose children to explicit music therefore we had to choose child friendly songs. One song in our original set list was Slow hands, this song features no curse words however the song has a mature theme meaning we could not perform it inside of the school. As a a band we also chose to perform a set list full of modern songs so that the audience could join in and be able to engage with the songs. Younger audiences such as the ones found in schools may also be bored by older songs, therefore it was important to choose a set list for a younger audience to enjoy.

Reflective Cycle
On this page I will be reflecting on all the rehearsal footage for this school performance of this project, to aid me on my reflection I will be using the ‘Gibs reflective cycle’. Using a reflective cycle will help give me writing a strong and easy to read structure, I chose this cycle because it is simple to understand yet has a strong and clear guidance on how to follow it.
Band Footage – Slow Hands (8th of October)
What went well?
Slow hands is the first song we have learnt and performed for this module of project 2, I believe this performance went very well and showed strong performance elements of which I will dive deeper into during this. One of our performance skills during this performance was our control of dynamics, our control of dynamics allowed us to raise tension in the music through crescendos and also make the music seem more relaxed with piano dynamic levels. Our dynamic control can be seen clearly in the verse leading up to the chorus as the guitar and keys get louder as we approach the chorus, therefore creating a build up of tension which we then released in the chorus. I am very proud of the dynamic control that went into this performance, this is because the dynamics added a thick layer of emotion and expression to the music. Musical expression is very important when trying to engage an audience with your performance, which is a very important goal of ours during this project. To improve the dynamics of the performance I could have used bigger crescendos in terms of dynamics. This is because the rise in dynamics during the crescendos was not huge in terms of my instrument, this is because the piano only went from a mezzo forte to fortissimo level. If I originally played at a piano level and the max level of my dynamics was forte the impact and expression of the dynamics would still be greater and sound more emotional.
Another aspect that went very well during this performance was remembering my cues to drop out as a pianist, this is because I am not very familiar with the song meaning I had to try really hard to remember when to stop playing. During this performance I managed to successfully drop out of the music on beat with the rest of the band, this was a great accomplishment as it shows quick adaptation to knew songs and cues when performing in a band. Accurately executing cues in live performance is very important as it creates a strong sense of timing and professionalism within the music, this is why during this song it was very important we all cut out on time with the music. To add a stronger sense of rhythm and timing to the music I could have played arpeggios on the keyboard, this would put emphasise on the time signature of the music and also energise the music with a more advanced and exciting instrumental arrangement. If I was to do this performance again I would perform this music by playing arpeggios, to give the instrumental arrangement more depth and emotion.
What could be improved?
One of the main things that could have been improved during this performance was my posture when sitting at the keyboard, during the performance I was hunched over at the piano looking at the tabs on my phone. Sitting at the piano with band posture is bad for a multitude of reasons, one being that it can lead to a bad back and health problems. And the other reason being that it looks very un professional to an audience, therefore in the final performance it is very important to sit at the piano with great posture. Great posture on the piano means sitting upright, and also sitting at a comfortable distance away from the piano. Next time I perform at the piano I will make sure to be more aware of my posture and sit upright, another fix for this problem is to write the tabs out on a sheet of paper in bigger text. This will avoid me having to hunch over to look at the tabs on my phone, I could also write out the tabs in note form which is easier and more understandable to read for myself. However during the performance it looks unprofessional to read from sheet music as it looks like you do not know your own set list, therefore it is also important to memorise your parts in the performance. However this is very early in rehearsal so it is note crucial to know the songs off by heart at the moment.
Group Reflection
As a band we performed very well to say this was our first day of rehearsals together, learning and performing a full song in front of the class shows great teamwork skills. During this performance we all played the correct notes and chords without every clashing with one another during the performance, this shows great knowledge of our own musical parts in the music as well as our skills to pick up new songs on our instruments. Knowing your instrumental parts is the most important part of music when working in a band, because clashing with other instruments or not playing at all can lead everyone else out of time or throw the singer off key. However to improve the chords and roles of the music we could begin to play inversions followed by voice leading to make the chord changes sound smoother, using voice leading in our set list will make the music flow more and sound gentler during chord changes. If we were to do this performance again I would probably discuss with the band how we could make the harmony flow better and include voice leading in the performance.
One thing that needed improving in this performance was the guitar solo as it sounded off key and wrong in contrast to the rest of the song, this is because when it came to the solo at the end of the song it sounded like wrong notes were played therefore made the solo seem unorganised and tight. It is important that the guitar instrumental in this song is played perfectly as it has a gentle and melodic tone to it that brings life to the song, this solo is also played multiple times throughout the song therefore it is important to be able to play it perfectly to avoid problems in future performances of this song. If I could redo this rehearsal I would probably suggest to the guitarist to have some individual practice time to himself to nail the guitar instrumental and get it performance ready.
Another flaw to this performance was our stage confidence as a whole, this is because during the performance all of us were concentrating too hard on getting the music right, which is important. However if you concentrate too hard on getting music perfectly then you forget to enjoy it, and if you aren’t enjoying the music on stage the audience will also most likely not enjoy it. Concentrating to hard shows on your music also shows the audience that you do not know it well and looks unprofessional, therefore it is very important to be comfortable with your musical role in the performance before you perform it in front of a live audience. This problem will be solved with more rehearsals and when we confidently know what to play without sheet music, this will allow us to look around the room and enjoy the music we are playing more. If I was to do this performance again, to fix this issue I would look around the room to other band members and communicate with them on stage. Due to how my piano is facing the wall it is harder to face them or the audience, therefore in the final performance the piano should be facing the audience therefore I could look at them and my band members and communicate with them.
Comethru
Band footage (November 10th)
This is footage of the second performance we have done with the songs in our set list, for this performance we chose to play comethru in front of our college group. This performance went well however also showed us all that there is a lot to work on in order to deliver a great performance to our audience. One thing that went well during this rehearsal and that was improved since the slow hands performance is my posture, as in this video by posture while playing at the piano is much better than before. This is because I wrote down the chords on a note book making them easier to read so I Didn’t have to hunch over at my phone. This was good for the performance as good posture and presentation are important when performing, as it looks professional and organised. Playing your instruments with bad posture can also eventually lead to having a bad back and long term health problems, therefore it is important to correct your posture as soon as possible. My posture and positioning at the piano would be even better during the performance if I kept my foot over the sustain pedal at all times, this would be when I needed to start a new pedal I could just put my foot without having to find the pedal with my foot. This would overall result in faster and more efficient sustain pedal control on the piano.
Another strong point of this performance was my use of the sustain pedal during the song, most examples of me using the pedal in a more advanced way can be seen at the end of the verse when I play a crescendo on the chord of Gmaj. During this crescendo I hold down the sustain pedal to build up tension within the music to anticipate the lead up to the chorus, however on the last beat of the crescendo I release the sustain pedal and stop playing the chords until the chorus starts. This leaves a gap of silence within the music which creates a huge contrast in dynamics for the music, dynamic contrast is important in music as it can make the music sounds more interesting and excite the audience. Without the use of the sustain pedal in the crescendo the chords would sound very staccato and it would be harder fluently build up the dynamics without sustaining the notes. Using the sustain pedal in music is very important as it can be used to make the music flow more fluently, especially between chord transitions in pop music such as the songs we are playing for this set list. Speaking of pedal and dynamic contrast, the dynamics of this music could have been improved around the crescendos. This is because the use of crescendos in the lead up to the verse was not very consistent, because in the second verse the dynamics were very flat in the build up to the chorus. This made the music sounds very boring to the audience as it provided no build up of tension. In my next performance I will fix this mistake by being more conscious in the lead up the chorus so that I can play the crescendo, because I believe the main reason this mistake happened is because the chorus caught me by surprised, therefore I must be more attentive to the music I am performing.
What could be improved?
This footage has shown me many strong points of my performance which I must carry over to the final performance, however from this video I have also learnt of many weaknesses that must be fixed before the final performance. One mistake that was made during this performance can be seen at the very start of the music, at this point in the performance I began playing the music later than everyone else in the band. The unorganised start in the music made the arrangement sounds messy and sloppy, I believe this mistake was made as we did not have an official count in for the song which lead to me starting later in the music. To avoid this problem in future we should have someone count us into the music so that we all start at the same time, as without a count in we all have to guess when to start and hope we all start at the same time.
There was also multiple moments in the performance where I missed chords and went off time, some examples of me playing off time can be seen in the first and second verse of the song. This mistake was caused because I did not confidently know when to play the chords in the rhythm of the song which lead me to playing them off time. Playing chords or notes off time in the middle of the is bad for many reasons, one reason is because it looks unprofessional to a live audience as it shows you do not know your parts. The pattern this mistake followed for this rehearsal is that it occurred throughout every verse, meaning to fix this mistake I must rehearse the verse more than any other part of the song to improve my role in the music. The other reason it is bad is because it can completely throw off the timing off other band members, which can lead to the song completely losing its timing. To fix this issue by the next band rehearsal I will listen to the song more so that I can learn the structure of the song and rhythm of chords in the music. I will also perform independent rehearsal at home along with the backing track of the music so that I get used to playing in time with the music. Another element I would like to improve by the next band rehearsal of this music would be to perform ‘Comethru’ without the help of sheet music or tabs, this is because I need to be able to play without sheet music by the final performance to look professional and show the audience that I know the set list.
To improve this performance I could implement arpeggios, this is because playing block chords like I did in this song overpowered rhythm of the guitar at times, in this performance playing the block chords was also very boring at is lead to lack of variation in arrangement between verse and chorus. This is because I play block chords in a similar rhythm in all parts except for the crescendo, to improve this mistake I could add an arpeggio into the music which compliments the rhythm of the guitar so that I don’t drown out the main rhythm of the music. Playing arpeggios in the music would also be an opportunity for me to play a more advanced piano part in the music, as for me and the audience it is very boring just to play triads and block chords in the music. Arpeggios are also often used in pop music to emphasise the tempo and time of the music and create a sense of movement in the music, this is why it will be a good idea to implement an arpeggio into the music.
One other mistake in the music I made was playing the outro for 4 bars longer than I should have before finishing, this did not sound bad as I brought the music to a natural and relaxed conclusion. I only made this mistake as I did not confidently know the arrangement of the outro, therefore it carried on for longer than my other band members thought it was going to last. For small bands it is important to stick to a rehearsed plan, as improvising or going off rehearsed roles can lead to throwing other band members off time and overall ruin the performance. To avoid this issue in the future I will rehearse the outro and learn the chords via tabs so that I know when to finish with my other band members, in this case a strenght that can be seen in this issue is being able to recover and play through mistakes. Because even though I made a mistake I just rotated through the chord progression once more and resolved the music on a C major chord. I played a C major instead of the C major 7 used throughout the song as it sounds more resolved at the end of the music, improvising the ending to this song shows that I can resolve my mistakes and bring the music to a professional conclusion.
Group Reflection
Independent Practice 1 (13th November)
This is some footage I recorded at home of an independent rehearsal session I did on comethru, this session went very well as it helped me advance my piano playing in this song for our band. One problem I ran into when starting the session was actually recording the footage, because I had no band to play the song along side me I needed a backing track to play along to. I got my backing track from spotify on my phone and then tried recording my rehearsal along side it, however the problem was that my phone could not record and play music at the same time. To fix this issue I had to burrow a family members phone to play the music while I used my own phone to record it. Once this problem was dealt I captured footage of a rehearsal session that went very well and progressed my instrumental skill a lot.
One of the biggest improvements I gained from this rehearsal was adding an arpeggio pattern in the bass clef of the piano to emphasise the rhythm of the music and excite the instrumental arrangement of the music. Adding the left hand pattern provided the music with more rhythmical energy, it also showcases my piano skills a little more. Because just playing root notes of the chords sounds very boring and it unskillful, playing octaves can also make the music seem bland and therefore bore the audience. However I could still improve the piano arrangement in this song by trying finding a pattern to play in the treble clef. This is because there is moments in the music such as the chorus where I am improvising a lot rhythmically, I believe it would be better to try and find a fixed pattern to rely on for the final performance. In my future rehearsals for this song I will try and figure out a fixed left hand pattern to perform with, this will be an improvement as it will give the music a more professional song structure and it will also be more organised.
Another element I am proud of for this performance is the contrast in instrumental styles throughout each structure of the song, it is important to have instrument playing styles that contrast each other throughout the verse and chorus to make the music sound exciting. This is because playing the chords the exact same way from the beginning to the end of the song can bore the audience and make the arrangement of the song seem flat and bland, therefore it is important to have varied instrumental playing styles shown throughout the song. In the verse of the song the bass clef get’s more focus due to it’s arpeggio which emphasis the rhythm of the music, however in the chorus there is more emphasise on the treble clef as I play the chords of the song to the rhythm of the music. This sounds much more lighter than the verse and delicate, whereas the bass of the verse sounds thicker and darker. Therefore there is a huge contrast between the playing styles of the song structure. To improve the contrast between parts of the songs structure I could have improved by dynamic contrast by playing the verse and a pianissimo level, then playing the chorus at a mezzo forte level. It is important not to play this song too loud as it has a very gentle tone and is meant to sound relaxing, therefore playing too loud would not fit the context of the song. I did however use a dynamic crescendo on the G major chord in the verse going into the bridge, this was a strong point during the performance as it caused a rise in tension in the build up to the chorus, which was then released when we went into the chorus. To improve in future rehearsal I will add more dynamic contrast between the song structures to give the music more energy, and make it more exciting to the listener.
What could be improved?
This rehearsal showed many strong points, however it also serves much room for improvement. The biggest area for improvement in this song is the outro, this is because this is where I made the most mistakes in the music. On the second chord rotation of the outro I play the Cmajor 7 chord incorrectly as I play a B in stead of G, this made the music fall flat and sound off key. This is the first time I have made this mistake, meaning it was most likely a one time fault that will not happen again. Another mistake I made during the outro was speed up the tempo by mistake, this happened because I missed a chord and tried to catch up to the music by playing all the chords faster. This made the music sound rushed and unorganised, therefore in a final performance or professional setting this would look bad and unprofessional. If this situation was to arise again instead of speeding up the chords I would listen to the music to find which chord we are on and join in, this would be a much more organised and professional alternative to rushing the chords like I did during this rehearsal. In conclusion to these mistakes I have learnt that my weakest point in the music is the outro, therefore to fix this issue I will focus on rehearsing the outro to understand the chords better so that if I do miss a chord I can rejoin the band instantly.
As we get closer to the final performance it is important we begin to be able to play our set list without looking at sheet music, during this rehearsal I was using sheet music to aid me on playing through the music. In the final performance it will not look professional to use sheet music to play with the band, as it looks unorganised and unprofessional to bring sheet music to a gig. Therefore I must begin learn how to play with no sheet music on this song, to help myself to get the point of playing with no tabs I must rehearse the song very day until I confidently know the chords inside and out. Once I confidently know the chords I could also consider using voice leading in the performance to make the music flow more and sound more gentle between chord transitions. In conclusion to this rehearsal I have shown great development, however there is till mush room for improvement mostly regarding understanding and knowing the chord progression. As lack of knowledge on the chords is the reason I made most mistakes on the outro, as well as having to use sheet music to help me get through the song.

Independent Practice 1
This is footage of an independent rehearsal session I recorded at home for the song happier, which is a song we have added to the set list of our small ensemble performance. One of the strongest elements of the performance in this video was the outro as it sounded the most professional and performance ready in comparison to the rest of the song, this is because I played arpeggios which gave the music a gentle and delicate tone. It also reinforced the 6/8 rhythm the music was written in. In the outro I also didn’t play any notes in the bass clef as I wanted to give the outro a delicate and gentle outro, this is because playing the bass notes in the outro sounded aggressive and dark. Therefore I found removing the bass clef from the outro sounded much more peaceful and relaxed, which is the main intention of the outro in the original song. To improve this performance I could have used arpeggios more in the performance as for the entirety of the song I played triad chords. Using triads sounds very boring if it used from the start to finish of the song, it can also sound very rough and jump if voice leading is not used like in this performance. Therefore to improve in future performances I will play arpeggios to pronounce the 6/8 timing more and also use inversions to make the chords transitions sounds smoother. I will do this by practicing more at home to get more comfortable with using voice leading on the chords and playing arpeggios, as at this moment in time I am not comfortable enough with the chords to add advanced techniques on them.
Another strength of this performance was being able to play the song without the use of sheet music or tabs to help me out, this shows that I could play through the song in a real performance without any musical transcript to help me remember the chords. In a professional performance environment it is very important to know the music you are playing off by heart, as coming to a music performance with lyrics or sheet music looks very unprofessional and unorganised from the perspective of the audience. One moment where I could have used the sheet music was at the end of the second chorus where the music then goes back to the verse, because in my performance I played the C#7 chord for 2 bars when I was only meant to play in for one before going into the verse. This mistake shows that I still need to work on the structure of the song and know how long to play the chords for, therefore I still need to practice with sheet music until I am confident with the music and song structure. To fix this problem by my next rehearsal I will listen to the song on Spotify so that I learn the song structure faster, once I am confident with the song structure there will be no mistakes in regards to playing the chords for the wrong part of the song.
What could be improved?
This rehearsal shows strong areas and skills that must be carried over into the final performance such as performing without transcript, however this performance all shows many areas that need to be improved in order to deliver a professional and great final performance. One area that needs to be improved is timing and musical accuracy, as there were multiple moments in the music where I played chords too late or played the wrong note completely. One example where I played a chord too late can be seen in the second verse when I am supposed to be playing D# minor I lagged behind a little bit and played the chords too late. This was a minor mistake, however in a live performance many audience members may pick up on this, mistakes like this should be resolved by the final performance as it looks unprofessional to be playing out of time in the music or playing your part incorrectly. Playing chords too late can also throw off the singer and other instrumental players, which in my case would be our guitarist. The only way I can fix minor mistakes like this is through rehearsing the song over and over until it is as perfect as possible. Therefore to improve I will rehearse whenever I can as a band, however I will get the most chances to rehearse by myself, therefore I will improve my skill on playing this song through repetition of playing through the song.
During this rehearsal I tried to experiment with different rhythms on the piano during the song, this experiment was mostly unsuccessful as it lead to many mistakes. The main rhythm that was played during the performance was a rhythm which hopped around a lot, and could be described to mildly resemble a circus theme. Playing this theme lead to many mistakes as it sounded similar to rhythms often used in 4/4 common time, therefore I sometimes went into playing 4/4 rhythms which lead to me throwing myself playing off time and completely missing chords. Therefore I must find a rhythm that fits the 6/8 timing the song has, one rhythmic idea I have already mentioned for this during my reflection has been playing arpeggios, I got this idea from project one as I performed love on the brain which is also written in 6/8. For this song I played arpeggios which fit into the rhythm of the song very well, therefore I thought it would be a good idea to also use an arpeggio pattern in this song. The easiest way to work on arpeggio is to play all the notes in the triad of the chords individually in addition to the root on top, an example of this is playing C, E, G, C for a C major arpeggio in a song. Therefore it will be very simple and easy to work an arpeggio into ‘Happier’.
In conclusion to this rehearsal session the main issue found in the music is the rhythm, as the rhythm I played in the footage does not emphasise the 6/8 timing. The solution to this which I have discussed is adding an arpeggio pattern to the music, another issue which has to be worked on is knowing the song structure and chord progressions, which I will fix through rehearsing the song. However I have done a good job attempting to play the music without sheet music as there was just a couple of mistakes. The area which needs the least improvement in this song is the outro as it sounded very professional, therefore I have done a good job during this rehearsal and have also given myself many areas to improve upon.
Independent practice 2
This video shows the second rehearsal session I did myself on the song Happier at the home, this rehearsal has shown many elements that are good and should be carried over to the final performance. However there are also many mistakes that have been made in this performance, meaning there is a lot to learn from and improve in order to perform the song better. One strength that can be seen in my performance is the use of an arpeggio, I chose to add an arpeggio into the piano arrangement of this song to highlight the irregular 6/8 time signature in the music, because in my last performance on this song I played block chords which in a rhythm that is often used in 4/4, this caused me to go out of time on multiple occasions therefore disrupting the song. The arpeggios in this video are made up of the regular triads of the chord progression along with the root note at the top of the arpeggio. Using this arpeggio was great for this performance as it emphasised the 6/8 time signature of this music and made the piano arrangement for this music more soulful and energetic, therefore avoiding the audience getting board of the thin instrumental arrangements. To further improve the arpeggios I should create a new arpeggio pattern for the bridge, this is because this section of the song is meant to contrast the previous segments such as the chorus and verse. To come up with a new arpeggio I will experiment with different rhythms that I could play in the bridge and maybe a new variation of notes, changing these two parameters while still keeping the original notes of the chord can create an interesting new arpeggio pattern which is still in key with the song. If I was to this performance again I would come up with a new arpeggio pattern for the bridge prior to recording, the different variations of arpeggios in the music would make it unpredictable and therefore exciting to the listener.
Speaking of the adding variation in the piano arrangement, another thing I did well in this rehearsal was making the outro stand out from the rest of the song, I did this by removing the bass clef notes from the outro and started only playing the main arpeggio in treble clef. The absence of the bass clef made the music sound delicate and fragile, therefore allowing me to end the song on a gentle and peaceful note. Another great thing I did which can be seen in the outro as well as almost every verse and chorus is playing a ritardando on the final C sharp major 7 of the structure, this playing this chord gradually getting slower creates a feeling of tiredness and stillness. This technique is used in the original song and it sounded very nice, therefore I decided to use it in our band arrangement for the song. Using this technique also adds more depth to the music making it more interesting to the audience that are listening, one thing that could be further improved in this performance would be the use of dynamics in the outro as well as throughout the whole song. For example in the outro I would play at a Piano dynamic level to give the music a calm and gentle tone, however in the chorus I would play at a Forte dynamic level to give the music more energy and aggression to it. Having dynamic contrast between the different parts of the songs structure would also make the song sound more interesting and unpredictable to the audience.
What could be improved?
The main issue that needs to be improved on this song is timing, as on multiple occasions while playing I lost time and sometimes even delayed moving onto the next part of the songs structure. This made the song sound unorganised and messy, therefore I must rehearse more until I comfortable with playing in time and transitioning between the song structure. One moment were I can be seen playing out of time is in the second chorus in the song, in this moment I am speeding up the rhythm of the arpeggio I am playing which causes me to lose time in the music. To avoid issue like this in the future I will focus more on the tempo and beat of the music while playing, paying careful attention to this will stop me from drifting off time or playing in the wrong tempo. Another mistake I made in this performance regarding the timing was transitioning to the next part of the song late, one example where I played late and missed a chord can be seen in the bridge. At this point in the music I rested on the C sharp major 7 chord too long and therefore came into the bridge too late. This pause on the piano in the bridge was very dominant in the music therefore making it sound unorganised and unnatural, to avoid issues like this in the future I will listen to the song even more to become more familiar between transitions. Along side listening to it I will also practice a lot more in order to get used to the transitions from a practical perspective.
Another element of this rehearsal that could be better is the accuracy of the notes I am hitting, this is because in the second verse of the song I played a few incorrect notes in the arpeggio. This resulted in the piano playing off key and out of time, therefore making the music sound messy and dissonant. This problem was caused by lack of focus on the music which caused my fingers to slip and miss a note, to avoid issues like this in the future I will practice playing the arpeggio pattern more so that I am comfortable with it, making it less likely to mess up the pattern and play the wrong notes. If I was to do this performance again I would make sure to correct myself as fast as possible when making a mistake by jumping back in key and playing the arpeggio correctly, without practice and a lot of confidence surrounding the arpeggio this will not be possible. Therefore I would practice the arpeggio pattern a lot more before performing to prepare for this error, it is important to correct your mistakes quickly because it makes it less likely for the audience to notice therefore it will most likely not have a negative impact on your performance.
The final correction that I would make to this performance would to be more consistent with the implementation of the bass notes in the performance, this is because in this rehearsal the use of the octave bass notes in the music was very inconsistent overall resulting in the music sounding unnatural and uneven. This issue may have been caused as I improvised all the rhythms in the bass clef which lead to me making decisions on the spot, this lead to some bad playing decisions which negatively impacted the rhythm of the song. To avoid this issue in future I would write down a plan and experiment with all the different ways I could use the bass clef in this performance, this could have been playing; inversions, another arpeggio or octave bass notes in a batter rhythmical arrangement. Therefore next time I will experiment with the different arrangements I could use on the bass clef in the piano, which will overall bring more organisation and arrangement to the structure of the song.
