1980s’ Critical Listening

rock with you

LYRICS

Girl, close your eyes
Let that rhythm get into you
Don’t try to fight it
There ain’t nothin’ that you can do
Relax your mind
Lay back and groove with mine

You got to feel the heat
And we can ride the boogie
Share that beat of love

I wanna rock with you (all night)
Dance you into day (sunlight)
I wanna rock with you (all night)
We’re gonna rock the night away

Out on the floor
There ain’t nobody there but us
Girl, when you dance
There’s a magic that must be love
Just take it slow
‘Cause we got so far to go

When you feel that heat
And we’re gonna ride the boogie
Share that beat of love

I wanna rock with you (all night)
Dance you into day (sunlight)
I wanna rock with you (all night)
We’re gonna rock the night away

And when the grove is dead and gone (yeah)
You know that love survives
So we can rock forever, on

I wanna rock with you
I wanna groove with you

I wanna rock with you
I wanna groove with you

I wanna rock (all night) with you girl (sunlight)
Rock with you rock with you girl (yeah) (all night)
Dance the night away

I wanna rock with you (yeah) (all night)
Rock you into day (sunlight)
I wanna rock with you (all night)
Rock the night away
Feel the heat feel the beat
Rock you into day (sunlight)
I wanna rock – rock the night away

The song rock with you was released in the synth heavy decade of the 80s in 1983. The songs lyrical content is about dancing with someone, and wanting to dance with someone. The texture of this song is moderately thin, because it is easy to tell and pick out every instrument playing if you take a minute to really listen to the music. The instruments that play in this song are; drums, electric piano, electric guitar, bass guitar, lead vocals, backing vocals, synths and a trumpet. The harmony is this song is really nice yet simple, there is three instruments that play the harmony, these are the electric piano, the backing vocals and there are some synthesized strings that also harmonise. The electric piano is used as harmony in the verses, the piano plays whole chords making it a form of polyphonic harmony. The backing vocals tend to be used more in the chorus of the song, there are multiple vocals that sing together to make a chord as the harmony. the string synth is used in the bridge and it only plays a one note harmony making it a monophonic harmony.

The melody is dominantly played by the lead vocals, the melody is simple and repetitive, this makes it very memorable to listeners. The melody tends to move in 1 to 3 note intervals most of the time, making it very simple and allowing it to flow. The melody is mimicked by instruments that are in the song such as the trumpet. You can hear the trumpet mimic the melody in the pre- chorus in between the silences of the lyrics, it sounds like the trumpet mimics the melody but it plays it a few octaves lower than the vocal melody. On the lyric in the song “feel that beat” all the instruments play the same notes in unison, which sounds very clean and powerful, this then leads us into the chorus. These techniques and the instruments working with the lyrics is popular in pop and rock music, this song is of the pop music genre. This can be identified by it’s pop structure; verse, pre- chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro. The structure is very simple and associated with many other pop titles even today, as it is very common.

This song is written in the key of Gb major, major keys have a happy tone which is why it got picked for this song. As we can see the lyrics have a happy message, there fore the mood of the key must be correctly chosen for the best musical effect. The song is written in 4/4 time which used %95 percent of the time for pop music, the song also has a BPM of 114 which is also common for pop songs. The dynamics of this song are moderately loud throughout the song, which conveys the correct energy for a song of this theme and genre. The song is also meant to be a dance track and was successful at it, the drum kit is very dominant in this song and tells the listener what to do when dancing to it. The drum kit uses bass drums a lot which is very very common in dance music, and in after the lyric “share that beat of love” we can hear a use of four to the floor. The song also uses the hi-hats a lot and the snare drum. The drums dominance over the track gets the listener to dance more to the beat that the rhythm of the song.

OFF THE WALL

LYRICS

When the world is on your shoulder
Gotta straighten up your act and boogie down
If you can’t hang with the feelin’
Then there ain’t no room for you this part of town
‘Cause we’re the party people night and day
Livin’ crazy that’s the only way

So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon
The shelf
And just enjoy yourself
Groove, let the madness in the music get to you
Life ain’t so bad at all
If you live it off the wall
Life ain’t so bad at all (live life off the wall)
Live your life off the wall (live it off the wall)

You can shout out all you want to
‘Cause there ain’t no sin in folks all getting loud
If you take the chance and do it
Then there ain’t no one who’s gonna put you down
‘Cause we’re the party people night and day
Livin’ crazy that’s the only way

So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon
The shelf
And just enjoy yourself
C’mon and groove, and let the madness in the
Music get to you
Life ain’t so bad at all
If you live it off the wall
Life ain’t so bad at all (live life off the wall)
Live your life off the wall (live it off the wall)

Do what you want to do
There ain’t no rules it’s up to you (ain’t no rules
It’s all up to you)
It’s time to come alive
And party on right through the night (all right)

Gotta hide your inhibitions
Gotta let that fool loose deep inside your soul
Want to see an exhibition
Better do it now before you get too old
‘Cause we’re the party people night and day
Livin’ crazy that’s the only way

So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon
The shelf
And just enjoy yourself
C’mon and groove (yeah) let the madness in the
Music get to you
Life ain’t so bad at all
If you live it off the wall
Life ain’t so bad at all (live life off the wall)
Live your life off the wall (live it off the wall)

So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon
The shelf
And just enjoy yourself
C’mon and groove (yeah) let the madness in
The music get to you
Life ain’t so bad at all
If you live it off the wall
[Repeat to fade]

The song off the wall was released in 1979 but it is so close to the 80’s that I am analysing it as part of the decade. The song is of the disco genre, which was very popular in the 80’s. The lyrics of the song are about letting your self free to express yourself through music, the instrumental style gives people the opportunity to express them selves through this song. The song has the stereo typical disco instruments used such as; vocals, backing vocals, synths, drums, saxophone, bass guitar, electric guitar and a keyboard. These instruments were very popular in 70’s disco music. The harmony of this song mainly comes from the harmonizing backing vocals which was commonly seen in the Motown Disco genre. In this song their is multiple backing vocals which each play their own note of a chord, making up a whole chord. This is a very simple harmony in music. The keyboard in the song is also used as a harmony and rhythmic instrument in the song, it is sometimes used as a harmony for the melody but it is mainly used for rhythm in the song. The key board can be more dominantly heard in the later parts of the song.

The melody in this song is played by the vocals in the song, the melody gets more advanced as the song progresses. Most of the time the melody moves in 2 and 4 note intervals, but later in the song it can be heard that the melody jumps an octave higher than it usually is. At the end of the song the melody begins to fade and become unclear to follow, until the music fades away all together to an end. The melody in the song is memorable for the most part until we get to the last chorus of the song, because the backing vocals and the lead vocals switch role from the front line of the track. The backing vocals mainly at the end get mimicked by the saxophone after they sing their line, this continues through the outro of the song, until we reach the diminuendo and the song stops. The structure of this song is; verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus, outro. This is not an unusual structure for a song of any genre, it is often used and common in music.

The song is written in 4/4 common time which is expected of a disco song, as they often have a four to the floor drum beat. The song song has a tempo of 118 BPM, which is energetic and matches the disco genre. The song plays at a forte dynamic volume throughout the song until we reach a diminuendo at the outro of the song which brings it to a fading end. The texture of this song is not very thick as it has the average amount if instruments for any song. The song has a repetitive funky bass line that is soo repetitive it is almost a riff, if you where to dance to the song you might find your self synchronizing with the songs punchy catchy and repetitive bass line. Unlike most songs the bass is loud compared to some of the other instruments, which gives the song a funky tone. The songs drum beat is also very simple and catchy, this is because it mainly bounces of the bass drum and onto the snare. This drum beat is common in dance music, as it gives you freedom on what you want to do with the rhythm. It also gives people a steady drum beat to dance to.
