As we approach the end of the college year we now have to think about what our final project will be. I have tried to get at least three ideas for the main parts of music; song writing, performing and composing.
Composing
After exploring multiple ideas I have come to a conclusion on what I would create a soundtrack for multiple games. For each song I will compose 1 piece of music, that reflects on the video games mood and or own soundtrack. To help me along the way I will be using music from the games original sound track as a temp score to help me create music inspired by it. I will study the temp score to see what makes it create certain moods and emotions through it arrangement. Each video game I have chosen has different moods and different styles of composition just to test my skills and for a fun and interesting task. The games I have initially chosen are; Doom eternal, Uncharted, Last of us, Alien Isolation and Life is strange. These game soundtracks explore genres and styles such as; heavy metal, heroic/fantasy music, horror music and melancholic music. I think exploring this music will be a fun yet challenging experience. I am able to compose because I have access to logic, headphones, midi and a microphone. This means I have all the necessary equipment to compose and to write songs.
Performing
My second idea for the final project is to hold a live performance in front of an audience. Preferably I would like to perform in front of a real life audience, but if we can not do this because of corona restrictions we can hold a live stream concert like project 1. I would like to perform with MATFG just like from project 1, with some cover and original songs. If am to perform solo or in a group I need to work on promotion my self. I could promote through posters and social media pages or even purchased ads. Unlike project 1 where I was playing the bass guitar, I would be playing the piano/ keyboard for this final project. For this final project if I am to perform my goal is to play at least 3 songs in front of an audience.
Song Writing
My third ideas is to to write multiple songs and perform them with my band MATFG. I would like to have written at least 1 or 2 songs so that we may perform them, because I would also like to perform some covers if we perform in our final project. We would write songs on topics we can all relate to so that we may all chip in on lyric writing. Most of us from the band have an instrument at home we can use to write songs, so if we go into another lockdown we can still write chord progressions and other instrumentals. However we would need to piece the music together through digital software such as reaper and audacity.
Peer Feedback
All of the ideas presented were creative, interesting and achievable and therefore I cannot think of any weaknesses, other than it can be really hard to compose strumming patterns for a video game score, especially if you can’t find anybody to record their strumming for you, and the software used to compose may be expensive. Some potential problems may include possible restrictions on performances and collaborations due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, and the problems could arise with the disagreement with band mates on song writing.
