Unfortunately I only have a recording of the rehearsal on a mp4 file, which means I cant review any physical performance details. I am unable to upload the audio file to digital space which is really unfortunate, this is because the file is downloaded on my phone, and it isnt appearing in my gallery.
Individual strengths/ weaknesses
During the bridge when its I was meant to be playing semi-breathes for 12 bars before begging to play 4 quavers per bar, however during the practice I began to play the quavers 4bars too early than I should have, this does not make the song sound bad it just reduces the tension on the transition to the chorus. Although i have no camera footage I can tell through the volume and tone of the bass I was not using the techniques I was taught by tutors, this was because of my lack of confidence when using them. During every chorus I am meant to be playing 8 semi-quavers per bar to fill the music with energy however I did not do that as I was new to playing that fast and my thumb got tired very quick, even though I should not have been using my thumb. For this particular song I am very confident when to come in but after reviewing the audio file I have realized I dropped out a few bars too late than I should have . I am also very confident with the time a rhythm I am playing on, so I believe I don’t have to worry too much about that in particular. Throughout the whole song I played in time and rhythm with the music. I have noticed that I need to work in closer association with the band so I Don’t get lost and also so that I keep on beat.
Band Strengths/Weaknesses
As a band our major strength is the constant ability to all keep in time and on rhythm which is really good as that means, we all have an understanding of the song and we wont make any bad habits regarding tempo and rhythm. I noticed in the audio that we didn’t finish all on the same note/chord which is a F, this leads to a sloppy finish a needs to be improved by the final performance or it wont look good to the audience. We also need more use of dynamic difference between the verses and choruses to highlight the transition between them. The singers need to be more confident in using vocal dynamics and hitting higher or lower notes. But as a band we are performing really well together on this song, overall I believe that this kids is stronger than our first song.
How will you improve?
To improve we will have a band discussion regarding new idea for the use of dynamics and queues on when to exit and enter mid song for more effect. To finish on the same note we must all consciously focus on what notes we are playing and when. The best thing we can do in terms of improving our playing skills of the song is just to practice when ever we can do, to get better. For the singers to get more confident they can practice at home and maybe perform in front of their family or friends to get more comfortable with an audience.
Overall summary of performance
Overall I would say this song is definitely more strong than other first song, as we sound better when playing it. I would also say that the foundation to a great performance is their we just need to think of more advanced ideas to make a few twists on MGMTs song.
