TEMP SCORE- Is musical scores that have already been recorded and published, that are applied to motion pictures in the early stages of editing. The temp score is normally by director to match the artistic intent he wants it to have on the scene, they build on the idea of the temp score until they have reached a final score.
MUSIC LIBRARY- A music library is a place you can publish your own music, this music can be viewed publicly by others. If you are lucky your track can be used as a score or temp-score on a TV show or movie. When your track is played they must give you money to play it or purchase a music licence from you.
HOW CAN MUSIC CHANGE A SCENE – Music in film can show a characters personality, describe the movies genre and theme, and also foreshadow future events through its musical atmosphere. Music can also grip you to the screen, distracting you from reality, making you watch the movie in focus. Music can also be used in movies and TV to create themes for characters, these themes follow the character around and the music usually reflects on the characters personality or actions.
EXAMPLES OF IT: IMPERIAL MARCH
The imperial march is a very loud and intimidating piece played when Darth Vader appears on screen, the song shows that the character has power over others and the galaxy. The strings and trumpets create a intimidating sound that tells us that Vader has Bad intentions, and is the main villain. The trumpet that sounds is similar to the trumpet they used to play for the introduction of royalty to rooms they enter, this tells us he is seen as a leader and superior figure. On beat a percussion instrument plays that sounds like marching footsteps, this makes us think of an army march, which tells the audience that he has a army by his side. The chords in the song are deep and scary, telling us how bad of a person he is, as he provokes fear through others. The symbols add to the intensity to the song near the end which shows his power. The composition is a total reflection of Darth Vader’s intentions and power.
Without music in movies there is no dramatic sequences, action scenes look lame, and the movie can seem comical. As the music tells us whether the scene is supposed to be intense, funny or scary through its composition, and without it everything seems insignificant. For example if I played A comedic piece of music over a star wars fight, you would think it was meant to be a joke, but when we have cool intense music playing we feel on edge and exited.
Audio 1 – The first audio works successfully, it works really well because the trumpets are loud and grand. This makes us feel like we are going on a grand journey. Trumpets are also quit an old instrument so it meets the theme of the clip, which seems medieval because of the characters clothing. The strong string notes are also loud and low, the notes are played in a rhythm that seems heroic. The notes also descend in pitch as the characters make their way down the mountain, which works very well from a theatrical point of view.
Audio 2 – The second noise is very unsuccessful, this is for many reasons. One of which is that the footsteps are very badly dubbed and synced with the characters footsteps, this makes the clip really comical. It also doesn’t tell us what to think of their journey, is it heroic? is it sinister? The footsteps are also too loud considering the cameras are in the air and far away from the characters, this makes it very very hard for the movie to grip it’s viewer’s as the dubbed footsteps are too loud in dynamics for the footsteps.
Audio 3- The third one does work. it just brings a different atmosphere to the clip. The instruments work well considering the time era of the clip shown, which means it successfully fits the theme. The shortened notes on the violin gives the piece a Gaelic vibe, which I’m not to sure is perfect for this specific movie. The music still tells they are going on a fantasy journey, but it makes it seem less heroic due to the different instrumentation. The audio piece could be chosen for the film depending on the directors intentions for it in the film.
Audio 4- The audio does fit with the clip, it just gives it a different theme. The instrumentation that includes synths doesn’t really fit the theme of the Lord of the rings universe, so I don’t believe it is a successful piece for the clip. The audio also seems way too intense and doesn’t match in intensity with what is going on, on screen. The music makes their journey still seem important, but it makes it seem like a quest that has limit time to be completed. Making the clip feel rushed. So overall I do not believe this clip is successful.
Audio 5 – This audio was not very successful, It is clear this audio was unsuccessful when I couldn’t help but laugh at it. The audio used is a very popular audio used for comedic skits. The audio makes the characters seem like a group of rascals that had just ran off with a baby’s candy, meaning it makes it look like they did something hilarious and are running away from their consequences. Their is nothing wrong with the instrumentation, however the tempo and the notes make the clip seem funny so that is not good. So I would say this audio was unsuccessful.
Audio 6- I would say this audio good for the clip as it fit with the movies on screen atmosphere. The piano in the audio made the characters seem heroic and very important for each bar it played. The strings made them seem very heroic and great because of their long and loud notes that played. The bass line seems to have been similar to the pace of running, so it’s like for each step their take the greater the become. The music overall made the characters seem heroic and made the journey seem monumental, so the audio was successful.
MOVIE COMPOSITION ANALYSIS- JOHN CARPENTER HALLOWEEN
The movie Halloween was released in 1978 and was directed by John Carpenter. John Carpenter is a great director, however he also composes his own music for his movies which included the Halloween theme tune. The theme tune follows are a character called Michael Myers, who is a masked serial killer who stalks and kills through the movie, the music plays when every he shows up on screen. The music makes you feel scared and creeped out, this is because of its deep strings and fast high-pitched piano notes. I really enjoy this piano piece as it inspires emotion like fear as you listen to it, I love it because the note repeat on the piano but when you think its going to rest something new happens such as an add of new instrumentation or louder dynamics. The purpose of the music is to make you feel on the edge of your seat and scared when you see the character appear in screen. The music makes you scared when it plays because, of it’s minor key it is written in. But in the theatrical context of the score it makes you scared because you know the killer is near when it plays.

D- The bass notes in the piano are always played a lot louder than the notes in the treble clef. The dynamics slowly climb louder until 1min and 7sec everything but the piano drops out. And then at 1min 18secs all the instruments play at once with the loudest dynamics in the piece, making it very intense.

M- fast, played on piano, easy to remember (few notes)

T- Thin, but gets thicker in the middle of the piece.
H- The piano bass notes are played in unison so there is not much harmony between them notes. The bass notes and strings harmonise with the pianos melody.
