Personal Statement & CV

Personal statement:

Studying and engaging with music has been my greatest interest since I first  began secondary school. This is when I first started playing guitar, with a private tutor.  I have an interest in a variety of styles and genres of music, however my primary genre for performance is rock.

After picking up the guitar for the first time, I quickly discovered that I had some form of natural ability for it and took to the instrument straight away, and this is when I really fell in love with music and chose it as my career goal.

I have obtained RSL grades 3, 5 and 8 guitar with merit. In addition to the guitar, I am an accomplished bassist and drummer with basic keyboard skills.

I have developed my performance skills by playing several multiple gigs over the past year.  Most recently I have performed as a backing guitarist for a college vocal quartet supporting the Oxley-Meier guitar duo. I have also performed at the Black Dyke Mills heritage venue as a part of the same act.  Aside from college work, I have performed at Routes festival in Halifax as a headline act with my previous blues/rock band.

I am still performing on a regular basis as an acoustic act with a singer, playing in venues around Bradford such as The Underground, and The Record Café.

I have also developed my compositional skills and I am familiar with using programmes such as Sibelius and Logic Pro. I did a short sequencing project on logic pro, and completed a project in which I had to write out a score on Sibelius.

I have recently composed an acoustic arrangement of Metallica’s “One” for three acoustic guitars, and have produced my own backing track for it using Logic pro.

In addition to this I will be producing my own EP containing original compositions, and covers, by the end of the year.

I completed a short NCFE music technology course as well which introduced me to recording techniques and gave me a good basic understanding of recording live music into logic pro.

Currently I have a basic understanding of music theory, and have covered topics such as transposition, the circle of fifths, chord structures, and have touched on scales and modes. I will have completed my ABRSM Grade 5 music theory exam by the end of this year.

I also practice using theory in context, such as song writing and improvisational skills, for example, I have recently been learning how to apply a melodic minor scale over certain chord progressions, and how to use chord substitutions and inversions.

I have developed critical and analytical skills by always trying to improve my work, whether that is written or performance based.  I try my hardest to act on any feedback received from peers or tutors to further improve my work.

As a musician I try to stay versatile by playing all genres of music, and have played with Jazz, Metal, and Blues bands in the past, and even a musical pit band.  I still perform across various venues in Bradford and Leeds, such as The Underground in Bradford, currently as an acoustic act with a singer.

In addition to this I have also taken up other instruments, such as the Bass guitar and Drums, and I intend to complete some grading on these instruments in the near future.

As a student, I make sure to be punctual and on time to every lesson, and respectful towards other students and staff. I am a determined person and do my best to work hard and efficiently in whatever task I am doing.

Some of the tasks I am currently and have been involved in are:

In the summer of 2016 I took part in the National Citizenship Service (NCS) scheme, which involved organising events, fundraising, helping the local communities, and working with other students in teams to achieve funding and assistance from local businesses. This was a brilliant experience and I made some really good friends along the way.

Work experience:

I work for Old Hall Studio Signwriters and Decorators on the days I am not at college. This involves painting signboards, producing drawings for their clients and assisting with installation of signage. I also assist with some painting and decorating jobs.

I have played live guitar from the age of 13, and often play with a local club house band in Baildon. I have played at the ROUTES festival in Halifax and the Baildon Carnival every summer, and have also played some live gigs with my own band in Bradford and Leeds.

Hobbies and Interests:

In my free time I enjoy playing computer games and spending time with my friends, but my biggest passion is music.  I practice playing guitar regularly, and as well as electric guitar, I now play bass guitar and have recently taken up drumming.
