Essential Listening List

Smooth, by Santana on the album ‘Supernatural.’

This was released in 1999 on Arista Records.

Carlos Santana is the featured artist in this piece, as he is the lead guitarist. This track has a big influence from latin music. His fast fills and timing of these on his guitar are what make the song flow, and he uses various scales/modes, such as the harmonic minor scale.

I Should Have Known It, by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on the ‘Mojo’ album.

This was released in 2010 on Reprise Records.

Mike Campbell’s guitar work is the focus on this piece as he uses a slide in both the rhythm and solo sections of the song.

Bijou Pleasurette, by the Michael Schenker group on their self titled album. (Michael Schenker Group album)

This was originally released in 1980 on Chrysalis records.

This track is in more of a classical style with very modal playing on the guitar by Michael Schenker.

Bulls On Parade, by Rage Against The Machine on the ‘Evil Empire album.’

This was released in 1996 on Epic Records.

The focus on this track is on Tom Morello’s use of a Wah pedal during the solo and some verses, as he uses it in almost a funk style in parts, in contrast to how heavy the song is.

Here is the set I did as a solo performance showing various instrumental techniques:
