Personal Goals

My personal targets that I had to work on were mainly my control over tempo, my control over dynamics, and my playing style.

Tempo:

Due to our band being an acoustic setup, I was the main rhythm. This meant that I had control over how fast or slow each song was. I quickly discovered how hard it is to maintain a certain speed without a drummer behind you. This meant that I had to sit down and practice each song to a metronome until my timing improved and I could maintain a specific speed on my own. This really paid off in the end as at the start of rehearsals my time controling was shoking, but at the end it bcame very steady and drastically improved.

Dynamics:

I had to remember that as I was the main istrumental part, I also had control over the volume of the set. I had to adjust to the volum of the singers and not overpower them, especially during solo lines. While this wasn’t as hard to do as keeping time, it was definatly worth practicing as it made a huge differance on the night.

Style:

Personally, I have a love of Rock and Metal music. Consequently I am used to playing an electric guitar, loud, and fast. this band however required that play a much more mellow acoustic guitar, so this was a big change in style for me. I had to get used to playing an acoustic guitar, but also playing using techniques such as fingerpicking and percussion. After a few practice sessions, I had adjusted to the style quite well. I practiced only on an acoustic guitar leading up to the event and it really did pay off.
