I think the purpose of this project is to give student’s insight into the live music industry and all of the work that goes into working in these positions like for example live sound technician/engineer and to provide an opportunity to student’s the first handed experience this industry on a smaller scale as the students in question have done almost all of the promotional work and performance work for this project dependent on the part of the course it was on.
I think the main feedback got was related to stage presence and movement/body language on stage this made me conscious of how I acted on stage and gave a way to put on a both engaging and effective performance. I have also received advice on things I can do vocally that can improve my vocals and musical competency this was in the form of learning vowel positions lowering potential tension and allowed for more pitch perfect singing overall.
This project has shown me that there is more than what meets the eye as far as set up and has educated me on how certain setups are important this has also shown me how to add stage presence to my set and my overall musical skill. I also have learned the importance of levels and the importance of corrective sound management like for example the laws that effect the music industry like the legal limit of volume during a show (109db). I also learned the risks of live music if it is done incorrectly and has reinstated the importance of risk assessments within the live music industry.
I think I could have benefited from doing more research for this project like for example finding live videos of these songs and finding more vocal exercises to make for a greater sound and could have improved my accuracy during the performance. I think if I did this again I would try to find more material and look at vocal covers for these songs.
The practical skills I have learnt in this project is vocal techniques vocal warm ups and how to work as a front of house engineer. I have also learnt how to work in a band and how to communicate/play with over musicians in a live setting. Another thing that i have learnt is understanding of musical timing and the importance of timing in music. I have done this by learning how to set up the PA system and learning how the mixing board worked by doing this I could potentially work in front of house in future projects or potentially use this for my final project.
I think that this is a career path that I could potentially go down because I have both enjoyed it and have an interest in this field of work the main way that I could gain experience for doing this again is to go to more live shows and try to focus on the mix and the sound levels. I could also try to identify safety precautions that have been put in place to insure the safety of paraformers and audience these are things like barriers corrective fire exits trip safety and corrective rigging.
I personally enjoyed this project. I think the main ways of improvement for this project could be to do deeper dives on the individual song to gain a greater understanding of the songs that I performed. I also think that I could personally learn how I could incorporate other elements in to the track to make the cover versions of the songs more distinctive. I could also add dynamics to the songs to elevate the performances and to increase the audience retention.
I am thinking how I can use this to my advantage for if I make songs in the future this can help me perform them live and how I can enhance the overall sound and meaning of these songs I could also use this project to help me with production in terms of live sound if i ever help make live versions of music.
