Today I’ll be researching into the sub-genre of metal called metal core to gain a better understanding of what it actually is and ways to write and record it. Metal core usually consists of instruments you would find in rock bands such as drums, bass, guitar and vocals with the key differences being the use of high gain to get a really distorted noise on the guitar more complex drum pattens and vocals consisting of screaming and angrier lyrics with breakdowns. Examples of this are shown in the video below.

The pioneers of the sub-genre were bands such as Pantera, Slayer, In Flames and At the Gates who took ideas from the punk scene from the early 90s like earlier bands such as Integrity, and Coverage. the use of metallic tones from the guitar and high gain for feedback made the genre sound unique from the other genres such as NU Metal, Prog and Black metal. The two types of metal core are metallic hardcore and melodic metal core the differences between these are that melodic metalcore use softer vocals and harmonised guitar parts whereas metallic hardcore use screamo vocals and heavy distorted riffs commonly found in thrash and prog metal.
