for my recording research I have looked into the band Tallah and one of their producers called josh Schroeder.
josh Schroeder is an American record producer who worked in bands such as Lorna shore, besieged, Tallah and produced for plea for purging
he founded the studio Random awesome after his friend told him you can take any band make them sound awesome.
his recording techniques consist of dry tracking his drums with the bands he works with. he also automates his tracks with volume levels and effects.
his favorite microphones to use are the beta57 and an SM57 when he’s working with the snare drum.
he doesn’t use room mikes and makes the ambience himself with a program called pro MB with the fob filter.
when we recorded our drums we used an SM57 on our snare drum and a Audix D6 on our kick drum which is what josh uses on the kits he records with the bands we works with.
we also added ambience and reverb through our software which was logic pro with the space designer reverb system.
he mixes and masters all the time whether its whilst he’s recording the band or at home with the recorded files because he finds it easier to use.
whilst we were recording we didn’t mix anything which is something I want to start doing whilst recording because it’ll save time in the studio.
I also looked into different microphone set ups for the drums and guitar like the Glyn john method where you place one overhead above the kit and one next to the kit to get a very heavy rock or metal sound.
we also looked at different types of microphones such as condenser microphones, dynamic microphones and ribbon microphones such as SM57s which are good for live performances with vocals or the Audix D6 which is a condenser microphone used for recording low to medium frequencies
