Project 1- ‘Hysteria’ Performance goals

Aims And Objectives:

In this song i hope to achieve smooth transitions between different ranges such as my chest voice, mixed register and falcetto head voice, while keeping fairley consistent dynamics between pitch changes. I also want to improve on my belt, witch i have struggled to do in the past when singing in a higher key, as well as having good use of vibrato.

I focused heavely on the artists original technique with pitch changes because this is the tequnice that is the newest to me so i need to improve on it. To do this i will do thurough vocal warmups and watch a tutorial on how to switch between chest and head voice, the video i chose was helpful due to her help on the vowel sound and a propper tequnice that helps with My vocal strength. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSBCoGVHBj8

I also took into consideration Matthew Bellamys interpretation and style of the song. I noticed On a live preformance of hysteria he was singing very energeticly and lengthening the vowel sounds so i will try to replicate.

Technical and musical preparation:

When practacing i always make sure to take the steps of singing safeley and strenghthening my voise by warming up regualry, this is very important because if one is not propperly warmed up they they could strqain there voice, cause horsness or even log term injuries sutch as a nodule. warming up increases blood flow and promotes flexibility and controll, this is why i warm up regular. I also do my best to focus on good vocabulary. Prounounsiating words properly is important beacuse it allowes the singer to tell a better story witch helps the audiance connect to the music on a deeper level rather than just rythmicly. This can be atchived by over pronounsing words in practice so that the singer has a good understanding of the best was to anounsiate words is.

Harmony- due to Muse only havibng one guitarist who is also the singer, they often focus on more teqnical drum and bass part where there are also vocals because its very difficult to play complex guitar and to sing. They did this in Hysteria witch means there is a lighter texture during verses but they build it up with complex solos, distorted motifs, and a open chorus thats alot more busy to add harmonic and textural dynamics.

Melody- hysteria is in the key of A minor and uses alot of chromatic melodys that match the songs lyrics and name and creates a sence of chaos and hysteria. This chaotic intro and choruses relly bring attention to the the calmer verses and let people focus on vocals. The vocals melodys are also very repetative throughout the song, not only lyric wise but in the verse they also follow a pattern that repeats 2 and then changes and repeats twice, so on… this is a nice affect because repatition in a song creates famillilarity and emotinal conection to the song witch makes t mor likley of being remenberded si it has a higher chance of becomming an ‘ear worm’.

Structure and form analysis:

Hysterias architectural simplicity provides a good, unclutterd foundation to showcase my vocal skills. the repetative structure (Intro,V,C,V,C,C,Outro) is valluble because it allows the listernor to quickly focus there attention to the core harmonic progression, highlighting nuances that you may not normaly notice. Hysteria lays foundations to the vocal proformance. Rather than complex instrements, the primary driver of the song is expressive impact.
