well well well here we are.
Song Analysis
With this first task I felt was rather challenging, I felt like I did not know enough theory to be able to analyse a song with theory considered. I had to strongly rely on google to be able to help with finding out the chord scale of D minor and had a really hard time figuring it out. I hope in future for this year in music that theory becomes a very main part of this music course a lot like this digital space work as I feel it would be very useful to be able to take away from college and use in a music career and very helpful to me and my writing. I feel it would really enhance and had complexity to my original work instead of sounding as basic as they do now.
What Went Well: I think the only thing I did not struggle with was finding the time signature, the tempo, lyrics and the key of the song. This was the only part of this I did not struggle with as it was the easiest thing to do.
What Went Wrong: As I mentioned at the start I was really struggling with the theory side of this task as I am really not confident in my theory knowledge and wish to learn a lot more at any given opportunity.
What To Do To Improve: I feel the only thing I can do for this is just learn more theory and I also need to realise I can learn theory outside of college I think I just needed pointing in the right direction with what videos to watch and what sort of structure I should have while learning it.
Health and Safety
I felt experienced when doing this task, like I knew what I was doing because of last year. I feel all I had to do was refresh my self with the music health and safety websites(I linked two of them) and then I was good to go.
What Went Well: I could confidently list the main key factors of health and safety concerns when it comes to music production and live sound. I could breeze through it as soon as I found the write sources of information as a reminder of the risks of music.
What Went Wrong: For more points than I would like to admit I did have to dig deep to find the information. I may have forgot to add a few things lewis said at the start.
What Can I Do To Improve: In all honesty I need to stop being lazy and just ask the required information from a tutor instead of using it as a reason to not do more work.
Strengths and Skills
It took me a while to get to this task as I kept putting it off because I kept struggling to find things I was good at and struggling to praise my self much at all for some reason but once I got going I started to feel a lot more comfortable talking about things that i’m good at and things i’ve improved on as well. Also once I got going it also made me realise things I was just overlooking when I was in that sort of negative mindset.
What Went Well: I was able to Identify my own strengths and skills and I was able to provide proof of the skills I was talking about and confidently show them off which is good.
What Went Wrong: I was avoiding the task due to no self confidence and this resulted in me not being able to find pretty much any thing good about my playing due to a very negative mindset at the start of the first attempt.
What Can I Do To Improve: I can fix this mindset problem by looking back at my old videos and my old performances and realise how much I have improved compared to back then and also giving my self more credit as that is something i must struggle with if I cant even do a task for a while. CONFIDENCE!
Live Performance Analysis Presentation
Theres a lot to talk about with this one. The presentation I must say I am disappointed with my show as I am supposed to be quite a socially confident dude and I felt a weird amount of nerves delivering a power point of a great band I know a lot about to people I literally see and talk to nearly every day. I feel it was just unnecessary to feel that nervous in that moment and I should definitely work on that as it really clashes with my personality. Then there is the conclusion evaluation of the presentation which I feel I did a good job of pointing out the things I did well and things I definitely could of done better.
What Went Well: I would say the best thing about this task was the conclusion evaluation at the end, I feel I gave a detailed description of what was good, bad and what I can improve on. This shows I can confidently analyse and judge my self, my work and my presentation for the benefit of future projects or work that may require similar skills.
What Went Wrong: My main presentation was not as great as I thought it would be as I felt an unnecessary amount of nerves while showing my presentation and I feel since the audience was people I see and speak to nearly every day I definitely need to improve this as confidence in front of a crowd is sort of one of the main things in live music and I would like to do my fair share of shows.
What Can I Do To Improve: I can practice my presentation and give my self little reminders of things to talk about when it come to a presentation and having an audience, I can also rehearse it to make sure all goes as planned that should sort out my weird little confidence issue when it comes to this.
Individual and Band Rehearsals
This is the last task before this page is fully complete, I feel this was the hardest one yet because of my approach to this. I started off just doing what I normally do to evaluate the rehearsals, just talk about it as a whole and cover a few things good and bad in the videos. When I was shown the help sheet I though I could use that and so I did and I have used that sheet for every single rehearsal video which is a lot of work to get done.
What Went Well: I was able to write and evaluate the rehearsals with great detail trying to cover almost every thing in each video. I provided more than enough videos to evaluate and thats not even half of what we recorded. We did good.
What Went Wrong: Now because I was using the help sheet for every video this page has taken me a very long time and if you consider the time spent on the other evaluations as well for this project, I have spent a great amount of time working on digital space for this project even sacrificing more personal time for this to be a good standard I need to find a good balance of time management so I can still get this work done, learn and practice the guitar and still have personal time.
What Can I Do To Improve: In future I need to make sure I am not spending as much time as I did on this project as it took a lot of my time to produce this amount of work so i’m hoping its worth it. I also need to let myself chill and not stress as that could cause the quality of my work to worsen.
Setlist Research
For this task I found it fairly straight forward, nothing too complicated just had to use google for various facts and things about the songs we are playing for the gig to research.
What Went Well: I was able to pretty easily find the information for the task from some websites about the bands song, then all I had to do was find the music videos and proof of how you learnt the song using screenshots of chords and tabs.
What Went Wrong: Not much to go wrong in all fairness just get the information and provide a picture of where you learnt the song from.
What can I do to Improve: I could of included Day Tripper research as well instead of not doing coz you weren’t allowed to play a 3 song setlist in the final gig. I could reference a lot more.
Band Photos
I always like doing the band photos I feel it is something I would have never done without the motivation of college( partly because I don’t have a band outside of college yet.) Also the works never hard all you gotta do is find the photos, add them to your digital space and talk about what we had planned for the photoshoot and themes we were going for.
What Went Well: The band photos went quite well with nice photos that shows our group and what we are about through picture. this was all very easy to add to digital space as well as all it required was a copy and paste for photos and then a few words of planning in advance and past ideas.
What Went Wrong: The only thing that went wrong for band photos was the actual outfits and themes as we all agreed on a previous day that we would be going for a old Mod look to fully represent Paul and his style(partly because me and Paul got a similar style). when Oliver showed up and he was wearing one of the brightest full blue shiny looking chavy tracksuits in the world, I thought I couldn’t have him any where decent in these photos as we would not look the part. (thats why he is barely visible in the result of the photo shoot)
What Can I Do To Improve: I could of talked a little more on the process of trying to get everyones opinions and feeling of my suggestion in my digital space. I also think we should have added some variety to our photos too many of them look similar I feel next time we should have nice visible differences in each photo.
Band Logo Research
Again this was a fairly easy task, I researched six different band logos it was not hard to find information and it didn’t take long to write the information down nice and efficient.
What Went Well: I successfully found useful information on band logos and was able to easily note down what I needed to about the band logos. I did not struggle because this task was easy
What Went Wrong: The only change that would be beneficial on this task would be to just add more information about the logo possibly some more facts about the creation of the logo other than that theres not too much to change for the better.
What Can I Do To Improve: I could add a detailed description of how the logo was thought off, who made/helped make it and how is the logo doing popularity wise in this day and age for every different logo I have.
Peer Performance
The peer performance in my opinion was absolutely horrendous and a perfect example of what not to do on a gig. Our singers were well off with their singing and all three were singing at the same time which as we already know from past rehearsal videos it does not sound very nice. But the positives of this is it gave me a lot to write about in my evaluation.
What Went Well: I was able to create a great descriptive evaluation due to a bad performance following the word document.
What Went Wrong: I only evaluated the performance I have not included my thoughts and feelings towards the performance in a separate section so if there is any talk of feelings or opinions then they are within the evaluation
What Can I Do To Improve: I could write down not only a evaluation but a personal thoughts and feelings section and the overall impression I feel we left going on the stage and then leaving it after we finished.
Graphics Research
I feel this task was no where near as good as every other thing in project one. I feel I didn’t not know fully what I was supposed to do which resulted in me looking at every one else’s and no one else knowing what to do. I asked another student what he did and he said he just guessed what he meant to do and started talking about his own band logo and the process of how it came to be. which is why its such a small looking task with no where near as much work on as the rest.
What Went Well: I fully described how this band name and logo came to be. showing what was said and what ideas where spoke about for our logo to look how it does now.
What Went Wrong: I added nothing other than the idea and the fact that they didn’t replace the halo with the hat like I said. I should of been more aware of the things I had to do with this task but not many people did actually know what to do so i’m not alone
What Can I Do To Improve: I could add more things like inspirations and fonts to add more a detailed description of how this logo came to be.
Band Promotion
Again it wasn’t exactly made clear what we was supposed to do here but I remembered helping another student with putting posters up and promoting the gig and figured that must count for something so I spoke about that and put a photo of one of the posters up for some form of promotion.
What Went Well: I luckily offered to help out which gave me the idea of what to do for this task. I showed the actual poster and spoke about how there was no QR code on the poster meaning it may result in less tickets being bought.
What Went Wrong: It is a very short description and I am not happy with the result of it but i feel I cant write any more as thats all the promoting I did.
What Can I Do To Improve: I could get more involved with the promoting, posting online on loads of different platforms, telling more friends to come and watch and then I would have more to write about.
Cafe Gig
The cafe gig task went great in my opinion, I was able to provide a section at the start just purely to the songs research like finding out who the vocalists are, the fact it was for a movie and the absolute shock that Sean Lennon is on the track blew mind as I didn’t know so I shared that as well.
What Went Well: I provided information/facts about the song, I gave context of where and what helped me learn the song and I also gave a great evaluation and my thoughts of the gig following Lewis’s rubric guitar performance guide sheet.
What Went Wrong: I could of added a little more information about me learning the song and getting comfortable playing it, I feel that would have been beneficial to my grade as the learning process if a very important process and deserves to be logged.
What Can I Do To Improve: The information for the evaluation is absolutely great but its so good it makes the other not as lengthy sections of the task look really bad I should work on trying to make each little subject look around a similar amount of work that way one does not over power the other.
Live Sound
For this task I found it reasonably easy to research the things I need to research with the right kind of guidance from Lewis I was able to complete this pretty quickly due to its simplicity.
What Went Well: I researched and noted all information needed in a timely fashion. I feel I was able to confidently find and note points that was asked of me and i’m glad there are things on this course that don’t require too much of your time and effort, this allows me to dedicate it in other tasks in the course for a better out come.
What Went Wrong: I could of been more descriptive and do more research for sub speakers as it looks like the weakest point in the live sound task and I have a basic understanding for monitors I feel I could have that for sub speakers if I do a little more research.
What Can I Do To Improve: I can do some more research on sub speakers and other things in this task to increase and to better my understanding on live sound and how things work. This would help me be a wiser musician as my knowledge will be stronger and I would be able to rely on my own though instead of having to wait or search things up for an answer.
Final Performance Evaluation
I am happy with the final performance video as it captured a good sounding gig in my opinion, Im happy about the absolute flow state I went in to write and correctly evaluate the performance to the standard necessary. I was able to write a big chunk for each song of the final gig. This task I didn’t find so hard it was more a struggle to keep going after I have written a lot and realise how much I had left to do.
What Went Well: I was able to put on a good show and I was able to evaluate it in detail and got through a lot of work for this task. I know I didn’t struggle with the first song evaluation as much as the second one, quickly producing nice detailed work.
What Went Wrong: I wish I was able to treat my second evaluation song for as the first one because my second one took me a lot longer due to wanting to stop doing it because I wanted to do something different but in the end after coming back to it I got it done but I should have the same working mindset from start to finish to be able to produce the best work I can.
What Can I Do To Improve: I can get my self used to producing that amount of work that way when the work gets harder the more I progress I will be ready for it as that should make my brain so much more useful for all this kind of work and because I will be used to it my mentality should remain the same from start to finish leaving me with a better grade.
