I showcased my advert to a group of my peers and this is the feedback I received.
What has good about the presentation?
Finley: It was horizontal, in the dimensions of a YouTube short/tiktok advert. Shows what audience its targeted to.
How would you rate the quality of the advert?
Finley: 8/10
What do you think could be improved?
Finley: Music a bit too quiet, could be louder in places.
I started the process by trying to work out who I was going to advertise to. When seeing the other ideas people in my group had, I decided to move away from making the advert directed towards children and instead decided to advertise it towards teens/young adults.
The plot of the advert is simply showing the viewer the product by explaining the easy steps on how you unbox and put it together.
I wanted my advert to be minimal and to the point because I realised that this age group wants fast paced and easy to consume content, so an advert which is very minimal and to the point would blend in with the other content and advertise the product to them without them realising it’s an advertisement. To appeal to this age group I decided to make my advert 1080×1920 so it would be the right dimensions for TikTok, Youtube Shorts and Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat stories, which is the most common social media platforms this age group uses. I took inspiration from several minimalistic adverts, especially adverts by Apple which are the best example of these types of modern and minimal adverts. Advertising the product this way doesn’t only change the target audience but also changes the product altogether. For example, if it’s advertised as a toy for children the price is between £5-10. However, when you advertise it as a collectable for young adults the price jumps up to about £20-25 as it makes seem like more of a premium product and adults have more disposable income to spend on it as children.
When I started my work I used Adobe Premier Pro and it wasn’t working for what I needed, so I used AfterAffects instead as for me it was much easier to use and we had already been taught how to use it in class. When I started I didn’t know how I wanted my advert to look and I went through many stages of development until I decided on my final design. I first decided to make the advert feel personal by simply saying hello, making the person watching feel as though the advert was made for them. I didn’t use any big graphics just a solid white background with black text. This made the advert simple and easy to understand, so the average consumer didn’t feel as though they were being advertised to. We had many shots of the box in front of green screen, however when I played the video in Affect Affects I realised that the green screen was not properly executed and made the quality of the advert much worse. Instead of this, I found the product online and then used the photos they already had online of the box and logo. For the clips of the product in action we used a camera and filmed the product in various places around campus and the classroom. For example, in one of the shots the fish is in water which we filmed in a sink to give the impression of the fish swimming in water.
I decided to use simplistic music made of a 80s back beat, a simple bass line and a synth. When searching for music online I realised a lot of the content online was either copyrighted or unavailable to download, to get around this issue I strung together a quick beat on Garageband using the copyright free loops Apple gives you on the program. This allowed me to make the beat how I wanted it to be and allowed me to have parts of the beat match the advert, for example at the end it drops all the other sounds and has a simple bass playing for the logo which was a technique I learned from watching similar simplistic adverts made by Apple.
I think I did a good job at making the advert simple by making the cuts fast and content on the screen down to a minimum. I also think the plot of the advert showing how easy it is to use was a very smart way of showing it to the viewer as it doesn’t overwhelm them.
To improve I would like to learn how to properly use a green screen so I could use that for future projects. I also think I could’ve used different transitions on the text in the video as in some places i feel like it didn’t quite work in the advert.
I confirm that the attached assessment is all my own work and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself and sources have been appropriately referenced.
