Initial Assessment

This is a drum cover of a song called Tu Solo Tu by Luis Miguel who is a Mexican singer and record producer . The title of the song is Tu solo Tu meaning “You only You” And there is a full translation of the song in English on musicxmatch.com on Google. This song is in the style and genre of Musica tropicale, pop.

The reason I chose this specific song is because I really enjoy listening to it but I also wanted to challenge my self and step out of my comfort zone while playing an instrument. I got really into Spanish funky pop style of music there’s bits of Jazz and Funk and even some Orchestra in most of his songs and it just sounds amazing to me. I love how everything sounds and how well put together this song is and many other songs too such as “suave” and “Dame Tu Amor” which I highly recommend listening to by Luis Miguel. I feel like it also reflects the kind of drumming style that id like to learn and maybe even produce songs sounding in a similar style and genre.

Moving the phone further away from the drum kit and speakers resulted in better audio quality in my opinion looking back at my initial assessment from last year where the phone was much closer it sounded quite muffled. I think that was a success, I also think that my improvisation skills are something id say is successful about this drum cover because I actually don’t know how to drum to different genres apart from rock heavy metal and pop and a little bit of hip-hop. You can hear me switch a couple of times because I was trying to adjust to the song but wasn’t sure what technique was the best and that was quite challenging.

I wasn’t as successful in playing in the right tempo or using the right drumming techniques as i thought I was that’s why some parts are rushed or played slower but as i listen to it over and over it just doesn’t sound right. Drumming without headphones could be confusing, sometimes you hear the music sometimes you hear the drums and you can get a bit lost in the song and play the wrong parts and that is exactly what was happening to me.

Next time I could improve on practicing a little bit more before diving in and maybe even doing some research about the structure and techniques.

To improve I will do more research about techniques and certain genres. I will also take some drumming lessons and learn to drum to a metronome so that its much easier for me once I’ve figured out the style and sound I’m going for. I will also try to use headphones as much as i can while i drum and that’s something i dislike doing because I don’t like it when i cant hear my self drumming because I like the raw sound of the drum kit. I’m challenging my self and will do things I don’t necessarily enjoy such as using headphones or a metronome but I know that its very important in order to become an advanced drummer in the near future.

TARGETS

improving my feel and dynamics around the kit, working on groove and rhythm

Using headphones in order to avoid confusion in which parts im playing and a metronome to keep me in time.

drumming lessons to help me improve the style of drumming im interested in learning.

using the right sticks I figured i dont like using heavy sticks i like a light stick it helps me move around the kit and avoids hand cramps.

learning the song properly knowing the structure would help improve drumming skills.

Recording equipment

i will try to experiment with my recording as i think it still doesn’t sound quite right.
