FMP LVL 3

Proposal

The clients I am working for is Deer Shed who is hosting a festival. The theme of this project is pocket planet, my idea for my FMP is to create a short music video that has animation as effects. The film is about a teen girl whose reflection [doppelgänger] decides to stop being the reflection.

For this project I will have certain scenes in my music video [experimental] where the reflection of the protagonist is doing different actions to what the protagonist is doing. I know how to create and edit this part however the only problem is that the timings of their actions sometimes doesn’t work out well, for example in one of the scenes I want to create a scene where the character is washing her face but the reflection just stares at her then the reflection resumes and continues to do what the person is doing, if I don’t do this perfectly the tings will be off. In order not to mess the timings off I will be counting in my head and keeping the actions to the bare minimum.

The client I’am working for is Deer Shed who is hosting a festival, the theme of this festival is pocket planet, therefore I decided to create a music video with a horror story line film, the reason is because all festivals have something scary going on, in my film there will be a doppelgänger, I got inspire mostly from then Brothers Grimm however I will be avoiding some gruesome parts. Since the client, Deer Shed, is doing a festival, there will be a lot more kids then adults therefore I decided to make it pg13. There are few changes from the original idea for example the protagonist was suppose to have a split personality but I decided to change that for the protagonists reflection/doppelgänger that’d be too complicated for some children to understand another example would be that I was planing on killing off the protagonist but I decided to the ending where the protagonist ends up being trapped in the mirror.

Brothers Grimm | Biography, Stories, & Works | Britannica

The doppelgänger was considered an omen or a death sign by the Germans. Some people believe the doppelgänger was an attempt by the ghost to counsel the person they had shadowed, while others believe it was an attempt to confuse them by implanting evil concepts into their minds. They were once thought to be sinister, if not downright malevolent. Seeing a double was thought to be a bad omen.

Aims

My aims in this project is to show off how I can combine film and animation together, however in this project the animation is going to be mostly used as effects. I am also looking forward on my story telling , because in this film there is no dialogue I want to make it super clear on what is going on just by their actions.

Intentions

My intentions for this project is tell a scary myth to the children and make them feel frightened. My goal is to ultimately develop an atmosphere that puts the audience on edge and scares them.

Conventions

They are usually concerned with the audience’s worries, guilt, and beliefs. Part of what makes psychological horrors so terrifying is the prospect that they may happen in real life. They are frequently set in regular communities, and characters appear to have ‘ordinary’ lives at first. What is the definition of psychological horror?

Big houses, wooded landscapes, warehouses, schools, and hospitals are common locations in psychological horror films. These surroundings give the spectator a sense of realism, which heightens their terror. They may often relate to the scenario, allowing them to put themselves in the shoes of the characters, heightening the dread element.

Young children or young families are frequently used as psychological horror victims because they are more upsetting to the audience. The killer often appears to be an ordinary individual with no visible signs that he or she is the perpetrator. When they are revealed to be a serial murderer, the audience is typically taken aback, which adds to the psychological aspects of the picture. Characters.

Horror films frequently use the antagonist’s disturbed psyche as a weapon rather than actual weapons like knives and guns. Although these types of weapons appear in certain psychological horror films, they are not the primary weapon.

Contrapuntal sounds, which do not match the actions of the actors and hence contradict the scene, are frequently employed in psychological horror films. The usage of these sounds is an efficient approach to get the audience to become disoriented. Sounds.

The Idea

It begins with the protagonist waking up and going to the bathroom to do her everyday routines. As she stares in the mirror, she notices something is wrong but decides she’s still too tired and ignores her thoughts. As the day progresses, she becomes increasingly paranoid.

[Time skip to where the girl is in college]

When the protagonist senses that someone is watching her, she goes to the bathroom to wash her face yet again and then stares at her reflection, who smiles back at her as her eyes slowly begin to turn black, causing her to flee the bathroom.

[later on]

The doppelgänger is playing piano, [there will be animated music notes on the video} The camera would be placed on a certain ground level so I can capture a shot of the clone using the piano peddles. Next up the camera would slowly move upwards. This will be a medium shot of the clone pressing keys, the camera will zoom into the doppelgängers face and reveal her fully black eyes.  [animated eyes]

In the next scene the doppelgänger stands up and closes the piano, in this scene there will be a close upshot of her hands closing it. In the next shot there will be a close up shot of the clones shoes walking towards a wide hallway then stop, as the cameral keeps on moving forwards it stops at the another pair of shoes. They both face each other and make eye contact, whiles they are having eye contact the camera angle will be over the shoulder. The normal human turns around and starts running, the clone slowly starts walking towards her whiles counting from 10-1, once she reaches the number one the clone starts chasing after her.

The doppelgänger catches up with the actual person and as the human turns around the corner the clone follows and gets hit in the face making the clone fall on the ground, in this scene there will be a medium close up shot of the clones reaction. [in this scene you will see animated smoke]

In the next scene the person is hidden and the clone is looking for them, the clone disappears somewhere giving the person gets the chance to run, in this scene there will be a follow shot of the actual person running [as the background starts to turn black this is going to be animated] as the clone is following close behind.

The doppelgänger catches up and grabs the person and takes her into a bathroom where the doppelgänger will lock the person in a mirror.

Experimental Music Videos

One of the most famous music video that is experimental is Michael Jackson, “Thriller”, Thriller is a music video that is 13 minutes long that uses special effects, it also won a nomination award for a short movie.

A-ha, “Take on Me” is another experiment al music video however this one uses animation in the music video where they overlap a real video with animation, they use a technique called rotoscoping, this is where they trace over film/ person and make it into a animation.

One of the biggest scary experimental music video is called come to daddy from APHEX Twin, it is said that this music video is the most celebrated scary visual and it is a classic urban ghoulery.

Strengths 1

I love draw characters, which is one of my abilities. I know how to shade properly, select acceptable colour schemes, and select colours that complement one another. I also grasp the concept of angles in drawings, as well as how lighting works.

Development

What I could approve in terms of sketching is that when it comes to scale, I don’t always make it look logical; for example, the arms may reach all the way down to the thighs. Another area where I need to improve is when it comes to symmetry. For example, one side may be scaled perfectly while the other appears to be different.

Strength 2

One of my proudest abilities is the ability to animate; most of the time, when I draw a characters, I will animate their hair or make their eyes blink. For example, if I design a girl with long hair, I will animate her hair or make her eyes blink.

Development

One of the things I need to work on is when I animate my animation doesn’t stay consistent example if I try to animate my characters arm moving the hand/ arm will not stay consistent.

Strength 3

One of my other strengths is that i can and know how to edit. I have created and uploaded many edit videos, people have liked my work and I have been getting good feed back on my editing skills.

My downfall when it comes to editing is that I like to over use effects on my edits.

Concept and rationale intentions

My FMP idea is to create a 3-5 minute a short film that includes animation as effects. I want to do this because I have a passion for creating film/story lines and animation, and since I know how to do both, I wanted to make one of my own. At first, I thought it was a silly idea, but then I remembered one of my favorite movies from when I was younger, Space Jam, which is a film that includes both actual humans and animation.

I’ve learned a lot about the creation of ideas and the production of various forms of media, as well as the tools used, over the last year. I’ve spent the most of my time working on visual mediums like short films, which has taught me how to use and understand camera angles and motions to achieve the desired impact. This has also taught me how to more thoroughly analyze films for things like camera movement and scripts, as well as how to use editing software like Premiere Pro.

Creating and editing is something I always loved doing from transition to fitting certain sounds for my edits, changing the effects and contrast to match the tone and feel of my work, as well as selecting transitions that allow for a smooth flow. I learned how to edit sound and use tracks to add texture to what I’m editing, such as my senses video, as well as how to edit to a rhythm, as a result of this.

Since this is for a festival, I want to create a terrifying atmosphere since what kind of festival would it be without the spooks? The entire purpose for my project is to fit the theme, which is pocket planet.
So, for my FMP, I would like to make a short film with animation, and the theme will be horror. When I was brainstorming this idea, I was talking to my classmates about how I could tie it back to the theme, so I had to change a few things from the original idea, such as instead of being a double ganger, the protagonist was supposed to have a disability that caused her to have a split personality, however, because this is a family festival, I changed this because there will be children who will not comprehend what is going on. Another example is that in the initial idea, I planned to kill off the protagonist, but I decided against it because it should be family friendly. Because it has become a horror film for children, my aims with this project are mostly aimed at children, as it is primarily for misbehaving children. As it is a horror film, my intentions are to create a frightening environment to scare children.

I already have a general idea of how I’ll approach this project; I’ve planned out all of the locations and shots; the editing software I’ll use is Premier Pro; and an animation app that I’m familiar with is Flipaclip. I’ll start by recording all of the footage for the film, then clip the bits I’ll be animating, and finally put the entire video together. I’ll also need individuals to assist me in recording the film; because other students will be busy, I’ll have to construct a schedule based on their schedules.

Primary Research and Information Analysis

As you can see most people would enjoy watching a film that uses animation as a effects because it’s something different, it’s not something you see everyday.

When it comes to graphics, it doesn’t need to be to a extend where t is watchable and enjoyable to watch, but if it a quality but the story line is good people will still watch it .

Secondary Research and Information Analysis

Diary of a Teenage Girl

Most of the dialog is her thoughts, meaning everything that is happening around her is happening in her imagination which is why we see the changes around her surrounding such as the comic move or the person in the corner turn into a animation this means we are practically seeing this through her eyes.

The primary character, Minnie, interacts with her own paintings throughout the adaptation of Phoebe Glockner’s graphic novel about the sexual development of a teenage artist. The images Minnie sees and converses with — all drawn by Icelandic Brookylinite Sara Gunnarsdottir — are employed in a similar way to the animation in Life, Animated: to provide access to a person’s interior world (or fictional character, in this case). What makes Diary of a Teenage Girl even better is that the animation is based on Minnie’s own artwork, allowing viewers to see how an artist like her perceives the world as a constant source of inspiration for her work.

Loony tunes back in action

In this clip you can easily notice what is a animation and what isn’t, this is because the drawing is so obvious due to the shading, this is something i was planning on creating for my FMP however this style didn’t fit with my actual story line.

In this video above you this movie has its unique way of animating, they use animation as effects. This is something I’m planning on creating for my FMP, I want to use animation as effects. There aren’t that many films that use animation as effects which makes this type of films are unique in their own way.

Horror movie techniques

One of the most techniques for a horror film/music video is to have transitions, transitions crates a mood where the viewer feels the tension this is because you have to edit it/ cut it in way where it doesn’t take the tension away but instead build the tension.

Another good special technique is special effects, when you are using special effects you have to be really careful, because if you use special effects and they come off as weird or cheap for a movie the audience might not take the film seriously however if its for a music video fake looking like special effects are okay. You don’t only have to do use special effects to create monsters you can also create the mood, atmosphere for the movie/video.

Another technique is shot placements, shot placements matters a lot, this is because you can either make the film. music video follow the chronological order or you can mix the clips/videos to make the audience think about what is happening, however i don’t think this is good for a musical video since not only you are limited time for the song to end but it’ll make things look weird and it wont make sence for the audiance, on top of th

Character Name: Anna

Gender: Female

Age: 17

Summary of Character:

Costume Considerations: Normal cloths

Pitch

Location/ the equipment I will be needing

The locations I will be recording will be mostly at home and college the reason why I choose these location is because it suites my story line and college/school is one of the conventions

The equipment I will be needing is cameras, tripod and classmates helping me with some camera angles

Technical coding

There are going to be a lot of different camera angles, such as a low to express how powerful the Doppelgänger is. There’s another close up shot of Annas boots walking down a long white hallway. When Anna starts running there will be a tracking shot, this is where the camera follows the character from behind/ the side of the character, or when the character moves forwards, in which case in my film the camera will be following Anna from behind whiles she’s running.

Audience

The age target for my project is preteens between 12-15 the reason for this is because the Doppelgänger tales/myths are mostly for children/preteens I also made few changed to my story line to fit the pg 12 such as no murder/blood [basically no gore] i will also not be glamorising knives ect

Audio coding

Since this whole short film expresses feelings thought body language since there will be no dialogue the audio/song will have yto be specific to support the characters emotion

Narrative

My narrative for my film idea is linear, this is because everything that happens in my film is going to be in chronological order
