Project 3 – Studio – Based Broadcast Production Task – Tasks 1, 2 and 3

Director

What does a Studio Broadcasting Director do?

They make up more of the creative side of productions. Staying with a production, up to every phase of it and working closely with department heads as they have huge influence and oversight.

Studio Directors vary drastically from one production to another as do their limits on what can and cannot be on a production. They mostly help to determine program schedules and ensure conformity with broadcast laws and government regulations.

Directors help manage the Cast and Crew and the hiring of Cast and Crew as well of that they hold quiet a lot of responsibility as they have to oversee whole productions to the practical to the behind the scenes; Reviewing scripts and storyboards identifying potential problems on set. a side form all the fun stuff that they have to manage they also hole the grave responsibility of managing the financial aspects of a project.

This role would be the most important, however a production couldn’t be completed without any of the others.

Terms and Words

Wide – This refers to using a wide angle lens so you can get a wider shot

Close up/Push in – These are both very similar to each other but there are two key differences between them. A close up refers to the use shot that is close up to the subject or person. Where as a Push in is where the camera slowly moves and get pushed in on the subject or person.

Vo/Voice over – Narration played over B-roll

A-Roll – Interview or on camera talent – Video and audio filmed together

B-roll – Extra footage used to give context to a subject with the use of narration but this isn’t always necessary

Motion Graphics

What does a Motion Graphics Artists do?

A graphics designer creates useful, meaningful and functional visuals. What they make depends largely on what the client or company needs. But this will mostly include developing visual assets to make the program look visually interesting and hopefully visually memorable.

They help homogenise the branding and to help keep a constant feel and tone to the motion graphics. They make the Title Cards and ,depending on the project, Fun Fact pop-ups.

Apps used

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop Paintshop Pro

What makes a Good Graphics Artist?

Typeface design – helps you tell appropriate, pleasing, and easy-to-read stories by using the right categories of font and typeface.

Knowing and understanding colour theory – Colour theory is a series of rules to help create an aesthetically pleasing series of visuals. This involves choosing appropriate colour palette for a project and understanding how people perceive colour in various situations

Layout – helps you to effectively manipulate the visual space of a print page or screen to attract readers or visitors.

Camera Operator

What does a Studio Camera Operator do?

They operate and manage the cameras, they are in charge of capturing the action or whatever needs to be filmed. They know which cameras to use in which conditions and they know whats lenses are appropriate to use for a desired look and feel, this also depends on the situation.

They can film something very basic with minimal movement like a news broadcast where the only complex thing is moving a camera on a dolly or a crane gimble. (Dolly is a track that is used attach a tripod to in order to preform steady and clean movements) or if needed they can film something more complicated and difficult with intricate camera movements.

What Makes a good Camera Operator?

Photography – You need a good eye and a good understanding for composition, focus and framing.

Technical knowledge – You’ll also need to understand cameras and lenses and other equipment that goes along with it.

Multi-Task -You will also need to listen and think on your feet, adapt to the requirements of different shoots.

Concentration – A good Camera Operator has an abundance of patients as you will not be doing much other than holding a very heavy camera and shots can be long and tedious.

  • Inclusion in movies
  • do you think there is enough inclusion in movies?
  • What would you change to make it more inclusive?
  • Do you think movies are used to mock and make fun of minorities?(People use humour as a weapon)
  • Would you watch more movies if they have more inclusion?

For the Pre-recorded part. We are doing a comedy sponsored segment for a clearly fake product.

Roles I Took On 16/01/2023

On Monday we went to the Studio to try out different roles. We did this to see which ones best suited us and which took to our strengths. In doing so I found that I really enjoyed the following:

  • Directing – Being in charge of the vision and creative side I personally gave Henry a piece of paper that had talking prompt to help the flow of conversation and so that they can talk about things that I had in mind.
  • Camera Operating – I as well as a few other people were in charge of managing the movements and placements of the cameras, we also had to listen to what the director wanted.
  • Talent – I as well as the co host had to think up talking points, talk and give are opinions on popular figures
  • Autocue – In charge of the autocue, which is the moving script
  • Vision mixer – In charge of changing and swapping cameras.
  • Motion Graphics Design – Makes the moving graphics, e.g: fun fact pop ups, name tags, location tags and any other visual effect asset.

Logos

This is the first design was made by Bailey. Bailey is currently making this the shows’s introduction We changed the name of the show from FJaam News to The Star Show as you can see, in the image above, Maya also worked on a design (the one below)

This is Maya’s design.

This is my intro that I made.

I made mine just to see what I could make. So I really don’t mind if the team doesn’t end up using mine, I also wasn’t the motion graphics person Bailey is so that’s fine.

The Sponsored video with Jack’s voice over.

19/01/23 Evaluation

Currently Asia is the director and Azan, Maya and myself are all 3 camera operators with Bailey being in charge of the motion graphics design and the lights, Jacks on the autocue and Finley the Floor manger.

I’m currently filming the separate video segment and we decided that I’ll be making it as a spoof/comedy aftershave thing. With the Aftershave in this case being Water. The great H20. (not finished 6/1/23)

DATES FOR SHOW REHEARSALS

Monday the 30th of Jan at 9:30pm – 3pm

Wednesday the 1st of Feb 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

DATES FOR FINAL SHOW BROADCAST

Wednesday the 8th of Feb 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

23/01/2023

This was our first rehearsal. It went well, it was pretty chaotic as we all started fitting into our roles. Some of us were a bit more comfortable in our roles than others.

30/1/2023

Today we had are first rehearsal and the setup was a bit too long and we added the extra video segment, however once again the set up process took too long as we didn’t talk about the extra additions and changes so we couldn’t coordinate appropriately. We as a team have planned to rehears once more on the 1st of Feb. To better get our bearings. And to hopefully work better as a team.

01/1/2023

The Group went to film another Rehearsal, I was sick that day, the group interviewed Lewis asking him the questions they’d ask the guests. The mic died and the lights went off. So there was a bit of chaos. This same day Azan and I changed the script to better fit the tone of the advert. Allowing for a slightly more seamless transition to advert.

The Final Day and Evaluation

For our final day I genuinely believe, that as a team we did really well, the Director, Asia was directing us really well and communication was surprising strong despite missing the Floor Manger and the talent. In place of the Talent Azan took stage and did really well, Azan took the place as the host. For the guest, Henry substituted. They both had really great chemistry and bounced off of each other really well, some questions did lead to longer answers which did push the show time a little above what we wanted.

We moved the sofa’s according to the floor plan. The light plan was just the regular lights, nothing needed to change there.

I was on camera 3 and took the place of Floor manger until Finley arrived. As we were setting up the studio Asia and I agreed that the cameras needed moving to get a better shot of the Talent.

We had a joke sponsored video, which I made, we used as a cover to swap Azan with the actual host, which was Meher and Azan went back to be on Camera 2.

Feedback

Asia’s Feedback – I’m very glad I put you in as my 3rd camera because you’re great in managing them and you know what angles will look good because you already have previous skills including a camera, also it was helpful when arranging the display like the sofas, table, mic. Something I also want to share is that you are a good listener and you follow commands and you also give really great ideas which was very needed. Overall you took the role and did a very good job but the bad thing is that I wanted to change your role to floor manager since you are suitable for that job.

(The video file was too big to upload as a single video)
