Concept Development

Mood boards

Problems:

When I started developing my mood boards I used photoshop to make them. To make the mood boards I used different comic book character images from google and I edited them by using the wand tool. However the problem was that for some of the background in the images I used were hard to get rid of because when I tried getting rid of background it erased some of the images I didn’t want to get rid of.

Solution:

To fix this problem I used the erase tool to get rid of little pieces of the background in the image. This helped a lot because it made the image the look more smooth and clean.

Problem:

Other tools I used in photoshop when making my mood boards were the polygon lasso tool to mask out the characters from the image. The problem with this was that each time I tried masking out the character it would sometimes select the character with it, with this it would mess up the image.

Solution:

To fix this problem I used the the wand tool to select the areas of the background and get rid of them and I used the erase tool to erase little parts of the background. This helped a lot because it would make image in the end look smooth and standout.

Bot designs

Problem:

As I finished my bot designs it was time to move to the next step which was to add colour to then. The problem with this is that I didn’t have photoshop available and at the time I started developing my bot design was at home and I didn’t have photoshop on the computer I used at home.

Solution:

However to fix his problem I used an alternate software that is similar to Photoshop called Photopea. This helped me a lot during the development side of my project because it was accessible and easy to use.

Mini Graphic novel development

Problem:

After finishing my primary and secondary research for my project and completing my visual research (Mood boards and typography) I realised I didn’t start drawing or developing my mini graphic novel. The problem was the the FMP deadline was close and I had only two weeks left to finalise my project and I didn’t even start to draw or make my zine.

Solution:

To fix this I used the time I had and started to developing the story board and drawing out my character design and then using my story board to complete and finalise my drawing. This helped out a lot because I also got to digitalise and colour in most of my pages in photoshop and this process of developing my graphic novel only took a week.

Problem:

Other problems I had when developing my graphic novel is that I didn’t know what size I wanted it to be.

Solution:

To fix this problem one of my tutors talked me through and helped me research different sizes for a zine and suggested A5. This helped because it was the perfect size for my mini graphic novel and was the one I was considering.

Problem:

When I started developing my mini graphic novel I knew the narrative I wanted and I also knew what the story for my graphic novel was going to be. The problem with this was I didn’t how to draw it out or what scenarios my story was going to have.

Solution:

However to fix this problem one of my tutors had helped by suggesting to draw a range of scenarios and see which one fits. This helped me through my development side of my project because I decided to do a rough draft of my story that had different scenarios and I used it as a reference to re draw them in detail. This helped a lot me because I drew the pages that I wanted which was the story narrative I was going for and it was a lot more easier and less time consuming.

Problem:

After I finished all my drawings I decided to digitalise it in photoshop and started colouring them in. The good thing was that I finished colouring in most of my pages and after I finished them I usually save my work on my USB stick. The problem was that all the work on my USB was all gone and I couldn’t get access to my pages and artwork that I did.

Solution:

Luckily I had saved all my work on my digital space before this happened. However to fix this problem I had PDF files of my drawing and got access to them by sending them to my google drive and uploading any work I had on my desktop on the college Macs and with this I completed all my drawing and colouring.

Problem:

After completing my drawings, pages and constructing them on a A2 template in photoshop I then printed them out. To make my zine work I used a scalpel and a sharp tool to cut and fold. The problem with this was that the paper was a bit thick and it was hard to fold into a zine.

Solution:

To fix this problem I had it re printed out but using a less thick layer of paper. This helped more because when making it into a zine it was easier to fold using scalpel and ruler and easier to cut down the centre.

Problem:

To make my zine official and professional I decided to take a couple of photos and put them on my digital space. To do this I sent the photos on my google drive and download them on to desktop. The problem with this was every time I downloaded the photos from my google drive the files were to big to be on my digital space.

Solution:

However to fix this problem I previewed the photos from my google drive and took screen shots of them. This worked out so well because it allowed me to put them on my digital space for evidence of my FMP work.
