Jump cuts

Jump cut is a cut used in film/video editing where a shot is broken down into two pieces with footage being removed to render the effect of jumping in time. There are several examples of jump cuts used in film like comedy. They use different images and mismatch scenes together to enhance the humour. Another example of using a jump shot is for both magic and horror to enhance the scene they use a jump shot editing technique by allowing the character to disappear or appear. They also use this to add sound effects so it can have a frightening or a jump scare effect but it can also be seen as a magic trick also.(Master class 2020

Peer review

This cross cut edit that I edited was seen by other people that commented on how good it was. the feedback i got was really positive like in the edit i got feedback on how used the idea of manipulating time and space and identifying parallel editing. I also got feedback on how edited and how i could’ve used more than one type of shots and improving it to make it have more of an effect and also building more tension to make the scene more realistic.

Reflection: What we had to for this experiment is that we had to come up with an idea to demonstrate on how crosscut edits work and how it is utilized in film. We had to think about what equipment we were going to use and we decided to film this experiment on a phone. We did this because it was more of an easy option and it was less time consuming. To do this project i had to work with other students to make this experiment happen and we were debating whether or not to use a regular camcorder but we decided not to because it take a lot of time just to get it. The location we decided to film was in a classroom. We decided to this because it was a lot more silent and the environment we filmed it in had really fit into the idea on what we were going to film. When filming everything went as planned and went really well. what didn’t go so well with this is that we had take couple shot at filming when the robber was in the room and it took a couple shots to get it right and accurate. what we could’ve done is that we could’ve have different shots to make it more better and effective. After we finished filming we had to take the footage into a video editing software called Premier pro. What didn’t go so well with this is that one of the students i was working with couldn’t transfer/send the footage to other people in the group but we manged to get the footage and started editing it. As i was editing it the footage i had to make a crosscut out of it so i had to put two different clips together. This worked well for me because it looked like an actual crosscut. After i finished editing the footage i had to upload the video file to YouTube and then get the link from YouTube and and put it on my digital space on the film section. if we were do this experiment again what we could’ve done differently is that we could use a variety of different shots while filming instead of just sticking to a wide shot.

Match cuts

Match cut is the type of cut/editing technique that is used in film Post Production. The way match cuts are used in film is that the scene is cut from one shot to another by having two of the shots match each other by the action or subject. There are several ways to make a match cut. 1) sound bridge match is a type of match cut when a character or a narrator is talking, and the cut is made between two words that are the same. For example, the way this is achieved and edited is by having character A reading a letter or a note and character B reading the letter or note. This could be done by having the scene play out and having the dialogue done as a voice over for these types of scenes.

 2) another way of using a match cut is visual match cut/form edit. This is done by having the placement of an object in frame and making it identical before and after the cut. Filmmakers usually have tripods and shoot two or more different scenes in the same spot. A notable example of this is the training scene from rocky 4 where the two character (rocky balboa and Ivan Drago) are training and you can see that there are visual match cuts being used when they are doing the same exact exercise back to back. To make it more effective there are huge variety of shots used like wide, mid, close up, tracking and even insert shots in this montage. This type of match cut gives it a lot more meaning and depth to the scene. (1) 2020  McAfee, R., 2020. 5 Types of Match Cuts and How to Use Them Well. [online] Pond5 Blog. Plan: the type of match cut I am going to use for my experiment is a visual match cut where I will have a person jogging and then have them just walk when I make the cut/transition. This will take place outside of college and in the building. The shots I will probably use is a tracking shot and a wide shot. I will probably have one actor in my match cut experiment and the equipment I will be using is camcorder and a tripod to get wide and tracking shots.

Music Video research/ plan

The song for my music video is going to be the theme song from the big bang theory.

The Big bang theory theme/lyrics:

(Verse1) Our whole universe was hot, dense state

Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started, wait

The earth began to cool, the autotrophs began to drool

Neanderthals developed tools

We built a wall (we built the pyramids)

Maths, science, history unravelling the mystery

That it all started with a bang! Hey

(Verse2) Since the dawn of man is really not that long

As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song

A fraction of a second and the elements were made

The bipeds stood up straight, the dinosaurs all met their fate

They tried to leap but they were late

And they all dies (they froze their asses off)

The oceans and Pangea, see ya wouldn’t wanna be ya

Set in motion by the same big bang

It all started with the big bang

(Bridge)It expanding ever outward but one day

It will cause the stars to go the other way

Collapsing ever inward, we won be here it won’t be hurt

Our best and brightest figure that it’ll make in even bigger bang!

(Verse 3) Australopithecus would really have been sick of us

Debating how we’re hear catching deer (we’re catching viruses)

Religion or astronomy (Descartes or Deuteronomy)

It all started with a big bang!

(Outro)Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology

It started with a bang!

It all started with a big bang!

  1. The start of the song starts of with telling us that before the universe came into formation it was in a hot state that it exploded which is known as the big bang creating everything in the billions of years including the planet, we live on today earth. As the universe started forming it started creating lifeforms like autotrophs which are plant that developed before mammal. Much later, life evolved in the form of heterotroph animals that needed external sources of food. Around 42,000 years ago Neanderthals started making their own tools
  • The second section of the song is that it tells the audience that when the big bang happened everything in the universe started forming very quickly in a short amount of time and Humans were not around for that long as the universe has. Around the prehistoric times dinosaurs started to die off when the earth first started to have it’s first ice age. The ending to the seconding verse is ironic because everything did start of with the big bang.
  • In the bridge section of the song, it mentions that the universe is still expanding but it is theorized that this well eventually will reverse and and the universe will re-collapse which is known as the big crunch.
  • In the third verse it mentions Australopithecus a species of primates of which humans evolved from. Their main purposes are to wake up in the morning and find food. The third verse also mentions religious, astronomy, Einstein, music, and mythology. Mythology refers to the collected myths and group of people from Norse, Greek and Roman consisting of Gods, goddesses, and demigods. Astrology and astronomy were both fields of study which were very similar to each other. But since the beginning of the 20th century astrology is considered pseudo-science. Einstein is regarded as one greatest scientist in the 20th century and his work is mostly associated with philosophical as well devising the original theory of relativity. The song ends with mentioning the is all started out with the big bang emphasising on how the universe came to be.
Story board

This is my story board idea for the music video. it’s going to start with a clip in space which goes white and having closeup shot of the persons eyes and the it could cut to a wide shot. later on in the music video there is going to be montage of different things happening. Then the camera is going to cut to a close up shot with the person looking at a history book and there is going to be a mid shot of a person on the computer and then it’s going to end with a wide the fades to white. The cuts that I am going to use is match cuts. This is just a rough sketch/storyboard on how my music video is going to look like.
