1.Everything from choosing the venue, promoting the event, selling tickets and designing the stage
2. I’m really into acoustic music, so an acoustic set with a vocalist is what im setting out to perform
I chose to do this as my final project because I would like to develop my instrumental skills. I struggle playing complex chords or patterns with my left hand and would like to use this project as a way to expand on my knowledge and abilities within my instrument.
The higher education course I wish to move onto after college is focused around live events. Therefore, the event management side of my project is going to prepare me for my university course and give me some greater knowledge that I can then expand on once I move onto higher education.
I don’t intend on doing anything instrument related once I move onto university and higher education, so I wanted to focus an aspect of this project on something I wouldn’t necessarily have chance to do in this kind of setting again.
In order to complete the aim of my project, I will be researching many different aspects within performance, as well as the promotion and marketing of the showcase. This research will include looking into local venues, different promotion techniques and artwork, and techniques to help improve playing with my left hand on piano.
As well as this, I will have to liaise with all of the first years to see who will be presenting their projects at the showcase, and how they would like them presented, and plan accordingly.
The choice of venue can depend on the kind of acts that will be showcased. For example, if someone would like to project any of their work then the underground wouldn’t be a great choice of venue as they don’t have the facilities to do so.
Experimentation will also be a huge sector of my project, especially within promotion. My aim within the promotion of the showcase/project is to create some interactive media that can be posted on social media alongside any events posters etc. as this hasn’t really been done within a music showcase at college, and I would like to try and do something different and engaging.
In terms of the promotion, access to software and equipment is also extremely essential. I will have to work with new software in order to achieve what I have set out to do (innovative promotion techniques) so having access to these both within the project and possibly ahead of it will help me get used to using them and working them out.
These resources and personnel will be essential towards the completion of my project; without a vocalist there wouldn’t be a complete project, and without the rehearsal spaces and equipment it would be quite difficult to prepare a performance.
What is an events manager? “Event managers plan and organise promotional, business and social events. They’re responsible for running a range of events, ensuring the target audience is engaged and the message of the event is marketed properly.”
Other problems
- Venue already booked for desired time and date
- Will have to take into account any problems which may occur and act accordingly. Preparing any plan B’s well ahead of time will significantly reduce any stress should those problems occur.
- Taking into account noise levels and ensuring they will be appropriate and safe during the performance
- Reducing the risk of any trip hazards both on and off stage and within seated areas
This is a very simple plan. Within a more detailed plan I will break down each week into college sessions as well as any additional work that will be done from home. These plans will include any research, graphics sessions, rehearsals, promoting and creating materials. Creating a detailed and structured plan will allow me to be aware of what it is I need to be focusing on within each session, which will immediately take away any pressure of having to think about a plan, saving me time in the long run.
I plan to do written process based evaluations weekly, to analyse my strengths and weaknesses.
Looking at my strengths each week will allow me to understand what I can utilise within the next week, whilst looking at my weaknesses will show me what can be improved and allow me to solve problems effectively.
Pros – great for bands and live performances, within the city center
Cons – cant display video/projection, hard to find and no direct parking, inaccessible
Pros – accessible, screen for projections, PA and lighting already built in, all cables etc included
Cons – hard to find, no direct parking
Pros – Screen to project onto, PA system already included, great for bands
Cons – quite a small space with very few seats
The first design idea was a concept I created when experimenting with different colour schemes and designs within photoshop for another project. Within my promotion I will have to research different fonts, colour schemes, background ideas and the placement of important information on the posters. Deciding on a set colour scheme will be ideal, as this can then be implemented throughout the design of other promotional materials, to make all of the promotion look cohesive.

presentation
evaluation
I believe I was well prepared for my presentation; I covered almost everything I needed to in enough detail, spoke confidently despite my nerves and engaged everyone watching. I presented it well, speaking to my peers rather than reading everything from a screen.
The presentation itself had plenty of detail, but not too much to make it a boring overload of information. I tried to make the presentation visually appealing by following a colour scheme/design throughout and including images and videos where necessary. I introduced many ideas visually rather than just talking about them as I believe this would make my peers understand my concepts more, and the design ideas I would like to try and create.
My peers agreed that most of my ideas were very thought out and clearly presented, with plenty of ideas to support the concept of my final project. I included almost all of the information I need to, and thought about some potential questions I could’ve been asked. I definitely left some time for experimentation as I haven’t worked with much graphic design so I needed some room for errors. I am also quite indecisive so it could take some time to finalise a design.
Something I covered well but could’ve covered more was the performance element of my project. I spoke about some of the song ideas and showed a couple of clips but I didn’t go into much detail about what kind of preparation would be needed besides mentioning that I would need to research some techniques to improve playing with my left hand. To improve this I could’ve done some research prior to my presentation and included it within my research slide.
Some of the feedback I received from tutors was in relation to the workload I have for the final project. They expressed their concerns that I was maybe taking on a bit too much and I will take that feedback on board when making my action plan for the entire project.
Peer Feedback
Within my feedback, I received compliments on how my project was presented visually and the detail shown within it. Some of the strengths that were recognised by my peers include having a “clear plan with plenty of detail” and “good research” which I agree with. Although the plan within my slide was very simple, I was able to explain vocally the rough plan I had for my final project and the key points/milestones I would need to reach.
My peers commented that one of my weaknesses within my presentation is that my problem solving needs to be clearer. Before making my presentation I was struggling to think of problems that may occur within my final project, so this is definitely an aspect I need to think about thoroughly to ensure mistakes/problems are kept to a minimum.
