Project 4- Initial Idea

My initial idea for project 5 is to take the role of a foley artist/engineer, sound designer, audio engineer, composer, and music editor for a short film. This will comprise of adding realistic, synchronised sound effects which enhance immersion and give it more emotional impact by recreating everyday sounds. I will also manipulate and create audio elements which shape the overall soundscape as well as atmosphere with the goal of improving the emotional and narrative impact on the audience. I might also add leitmotifs or other forms of music when appropriate, but I will judge what genre to use based on what I end up working on because the music needs to blend in seamlessly with the final result; otherwise, I know I will have made incorrect decisions.

I will use the skills I learned in project 2, which helped me gain a better understanding of this subject as a whole, but I will also do extensive research on specific artists and try to get in touch with them for questioning so I can improve and develop in honing my skills. In project 1, some of the music I added over the film sounded quite rushed and didn’t fit in, so I will dedicate more time to think about the context of the short film and what music will do to emphasize and further develop that.

I will dedicate my skills as a mediocre pianist to help assist me with the use of MIDI. I could also use different instruments and objects to achieve more specific sounds.

In this project, I plan to take inspiration from the film The Substance because this film is the best I’ve ever watched in terms of foley and sound design. I will also watch more films with Gregory Vincent as the foley artist to gain a better understanding of what he does to evoke emotions through his work.

I plan to get the video to work on through a smaller YouTube channel focused on short films. If I can’t get permission to do that, I will find videos in their raw form (either online or from friends) and edit in Logic or Pro Tools.

Evaluation:

In my initial idea, I believe I explained the creative aspects of my project well, such as the roles I’ll take on and my approach to sound design. I also believe I focused on enhancing emotional impact, shaping the narrative, and integrating music well. As well as experimenting with various instruments and sounds to match the film’s atmosphere correctly is an important point.

However, there are a few areas I need to consider further. Budgeting and costs are important to address and keep track of if any are necessary. I must consider what equipment, software, and rights for raw videos I will need. I also failed to consider time constraints. These may become an issue when working with others, so it’s important I know what I want to do beforehand and have learned how to do it to avoid wasting valuable time with trial and error.

I will also consider technical challenges, such as synchronizing sounds or dealing with potential issues with software or equipment. I will prepare backup plans in the event that something happens. Lastly, I need to ensure I consider feedback and document the feedback I have received and what I have done to resolve that.
