Logic Pro X

Plan:

I plan to use a range of genres throughout this piece and want to create a contrast between different parts of the video because i was inspired visually by the changes between a built up, busy train station and the spiritual imagery of the the lady spinning. spinning also gives connotations of anger and a desperate want or need for something to end so I will use music and sound effects to emphasise the godly want for something to change in the average persons day to day life. I can subtly connect the the different scenes by adding a leitmotif. I can do this through midi and select an appropriate instrument. The leitmotif can also hint to the main soundtrack when traveling through the tunnel.

Tempo, Structure, Dynamics and Mixing:

With the tempo I plan to add varying speed then go faster in more more chaotic moments or when there is a visual change on screen. I plan to develop inconsistency in texture, structure and dynamics to emphasise more high energy moments.

When i layer the sounds its important to correctly automate volume as well as making sure the acoustics and timbre of the audio tracks match so none of them sound out of place. I will start the piece with loud city noise and as they walk into the station I will reduce the city noise and add more train noises and people talking.

In some arias where I notice a big difference visually I will add sound effects for a small period of time. This will add a lot of rhythmic interest because it builds up suspense and foreshadows the climax of the piece when the train is traveling through the tunnel.

I plan to end the piece after the tunnel when it goes back to the train station. I will fade the music out and go back to the realistic foley.

First Session:

On my first session i gathered loads of sounds online recorded all over the world and edited and cut them to create the desired sound that i was aiming for (known as foley). I chose to use sounds recorded by public on standard microphones because it makes it sound more roar and authentic than sounds from a professional set up. I focused a lot on the video and what feelings that portrayed to me and did my best to turn them feelings into sound. I believe i did this successfully because the sound matches very well with the video and captures/ matches the feeling of the picture.

I also edited the automation to make sure that all the tracks matched the volume and velocity that i wanted. This is important so that nothing over powers any thing els. I could have achieved the same result by just designating different sounds to different tracks but this would have made it a lot more complicated and difficult to navigate the DAW.

Next time i would like to add more panning in my automation to make the sound come to life more when listening with headphones. This will show the chaotic city life even more with sounds coming from every angle.

I would also like to edit the EQ of some of the samples because they were recorded in suboptimal conditions and the bass especially on my downtown traffic in the Netherlands is a bit overpowering.

2nd session:

To finish this my product I added some musical elements and tweaked with some dynamics on the foley because I found some to be a little over powering still. This helped every thing sound more blended and I’m really happy with the results.

To finish I added a motif that first plays at the very start as the scene first goes into the railway station and also ends on it when the train is traveling through a tunnel. I picked increments that were mysterious to show the unknown then at the end I used a more powerful instrument and added bass with widened the sound a lot more. I the fade out to finish.

If I was to do film music such as this again I would defiantly  want to record more sounds by myself instead of finding them on the internet because I find it a very interesting process  being able to create new sounds in weird and untraditional ways. I can also notice a lack of depth to my musical sections, I could have fixed that by adding some orchestra instruments. Apart from these I think I did well in this section because it sounds realistic and matches the picture.
