Project 4: Research.

About Auditions.

An audition is an interview to be an actor, singer, dancer or musician it is in place so that the director or conductor can see if you have the right set of skills and be the perfect fit for a role, character or orchestra.

dance auditions can run in various different ways. You can have a group audition where you turn up they teach you choreography and you perform it within the same day and a solo audition where you turn up with a pre choreographed dance and perform for the judges. They usually look for you to come prepared, as soon as you walk through the door the audition starts not once you start dancing. Dressing appropriately in movable clothing and correct footwear. Confidence, they want you to be confident in all of your moves even if you’ve danced the wrong move keep going and act like nothing has happened. They want you to be strong and different styles not just one style.

In a singing audition you usually turn up and sing solo they want you to come prepared with your own music sheet, your song pre prepared you need to know the lyrics and how it’s sung. They will be looking for different ranges in your voice, wether your voice sounds good enough, the amount of vibrato, And your individual quality to see how you’ll mix with everyone else in the show.

A acting audition typically involves you having a monologue ready and prepared or performing a scene or monologue from the script or improvising. It depends on what the director wants from you. The skills they will look for are your acting ability you need to be able to portray a character convincingly using your facial expressions, body language and use of vocal skills. You need to be confidant this can give you a stronger performance and make a good impression on the casing director. You will need to be well prepared study the script, research the character and the characters body language how they act, talk, walk, rehearsing the monologue or script. You need to be flexible as in be able to play different characters in different ways as the director might ask you to change it up for example, you’re playing a nice sweet character they could ask you to play that character as a cowboy just to see your abilities. Finally you will need memory skills as you need to be able to memorise your lines, directions as in where you should be on stage and actions.

Within every audition you will need to prepare more than one dance, monologue, song because they want to see your range of abilities and they may ask if you’ve prepared something else that you can show them, you don’t want to miss this opportunity because in some cases it could be a better chance of you being casted as a character or ensemble.

In theatre directors tend to take time talking and working with you on the character to see what you would be like to work with. Where as film and tv directors are less interested in that but more interested in you creating a fully formed character in your audition prep process. Film auditions tend to last around 5 minutes within that time the directors expect to see you present the character as efficiently as you can.

Research helps in a big way when it comes to auditions you should research things such as the company, the producers style, the part you’re auditioning for, the plot, setting, theme, the moral and the history behind the production. This will help you have more context on what you’re auditioning for which will help you have a better audition.
Casting directors want the best of the best and to know what talent is out there they will hold auditions, attend theatre productions and shows to spot potential actors. They organise auditions and look at headshots, demos and reels. They then present a selection of candidates to the producer and director, and together they will make the final decision.

Different types of auditions.

Open casting auditions- This is where the audition is advertised through the public. You can audition for anything from an extra to a main role. This kind of audition for lead roles are usually when the casting director is having a hard time finding suitable talent. You will not have a set time it’s usually first come first seen. You will need a Resume, including a head shot and you may be asked to do a cold reading of a script or a monologue.

Closed auditions- this is usually where the director has asked actors from a specific agency, union, theatre group or drama school to attend the audition so if you aren’t apart of those groups they’ve requested you can’t audition. These usually happen when the director knows what kind of talent they’re looking for and it is a lot more steady and easy going audition compared to an open audition.

Private auditions- is where the director invites specific actors to audition for the role based on your agents recommendation or that of another casting director. The actor will have a set time, and maybe a set of instructions for the audition which could range from what to wear or a few lines to learn.

Online auditions- An online audition is where they hold the audition Through zoom or any kind of FaceTime software. The actor will have a specific time for the audition and maybe some instructions on preparing for the audition. You will need good internet, good camera quality and for them to be able to hear you.

Self tape audition- The casting director will ask you to record a scene or a monologue and send it to them for review. This gives the casting director to watch them in their own time and is usually used for the first round of auditions. The best bit about this audition process is that you can mess up and re record however many times you like you also have less Nerves because nobody is watching you face to face.

Public opinion.

Many people have good things to say about once upon a time people say things like “it’s a cleaver mix of fairytale characters, magic, love and hope it is one of the most family friendly shows on tv right now.” Others have said “I love how once upon a time presents us with a world where the characters can’t just be bad or good because the show shows their journey of how they’ve become evil.”

They then made a spin off called once upon a time in wonderland and that hadn’t taken off which then wound up with people being disinterested in the original show. It has apparently been too Similar to the Lewis Carroll’s novels Alice’s adventures in wonderland and through the looking glass but this also would move it away from the once upon a time Emma swan and the fictional town of Storybrooke which the public had not liked. At first the spin off was just supposed to be a miniseries that bridged the gap between seasons however ABC opted to run the series while once upon a time was still airing so because of this after the first season it cancelled and made no more episodes.
