Gentleman Jack is a 1830’s historical drama tv series set in Yorkshire. It is about Anne lister leaving Hastings and going to Halifax to restore her uncles estate. She soon finds out that the family has a coal mine and that it is being stolen by two brothers. The show also goes through Anne listers relationships with her family, servants, tenants and industrial rivals and would-be wife. However the real life Anne listers story was recorded in her diary and most intimate details of her life are revealed for the series.
The title of “gentlemen Jack” is a reference to the name Anne lister was given during her life by her neighbours who ridiculed her for her appearance and sexual preference. The “gentleman” was because she had a masculine apparence and the “Jack” was another word for lesbian in the 1830’s.

Aunt Anne litter is a main character in the first and second season of gentlemen Jack. She is portrayed by Gemma Jones. Aunt Anne lister is a trusted, confidante, sensitive and affectionate lady with a keen understanding of her nieces needs. She has also been a mother figure to Anne lister since her child hood. While recognising her niece is unusual as well as brilliant, Aunt Anne shows how she’s concerned about how bare Anne lays herself out to scrutiny from the local press. Anne also worries about her aunt about her increasing ill-health that keeps her house bound.
Screen Yorkshire work to foster talent and build a versatile and diverse screen workforce, designing and delivering industry training and development programmes for film, TV and screen.
With screen Yorkshire they taught us about camera angles. Some of the angles that they use are, Eye level shot where they position the camera at the eye level of the character, Low angle shot which is a shot taken from the camera angle positioned below the eye line and pointing upwards, high angle shot which is where the camera looks down at the the character or set from above, over shoulder shot which is where the camera is placed behind and above the shoulder of a person, wide shot which is where the entire subject appears in the shot and close up shot which is where the camera frame is mostly filled with the actors face or a detail or object.
Tv acting is acting done behind a camera which is very natural acting. For the production element, they don’t film in order, they will usually take multiple shots of the same scene to get multiple different angles and it will take months to make a movie and a lot of money.
On Tv if an actor makes a mistake it can be re filmed the scenes can be edited or cut. Screen actors have to make their acting more naturalistic as the camera can pick up the smallest of thing like your facial expressions. They also don’t need to be projecting their voices for a huge crowd like they would in stage acting as the mics are so close to them it will pick up what they’re saying without them having to worry about a big audience.
Most people believe that gentleman Jack is an amazing series. People say the show is “one of the greatest gifts of my life” as Robin waited 63 years to see something like gentlemen Jack on tv and has spent most of his time watching tv that has had no one like him in them.
Another person has said that “watching gentleman Jack opened my heart to myself again.” Another person has said “I can’t think of a better acting performance on tv during my lifetime.” I am noticing that people are enjoying this show because of the amazing acting and because in a way they are connecting with Anne listers character and story.
Others think the show is terrible and that “The glorification of Anne lister as a landlord is honestly disgusting.” Another person doesn’t like the show because it feels that “They’re glorifying all the bad things Anne lister has done in her life” although another person replied to this saying “I don’t think she was a bad person I think she was just a person who made humanly mistakes and had hurt other people.”
