For research I will need to look at drummers stage presence and techniques to improve my playing and performing. Were doing hardcore with slam inspirations so bands like sunami knocked loose devourment guttural slug.
If I wanted to be a better at drums in this genre I would have to focus a lot on my double kick technique speed and control same with hand technique and speed. Ill still have to work on my over all drumming and the foundation skills.
SUNAMI drummer has a lot of complexed nice sounding kick patterns that make the song sound so much better. They’re a hardcore band but it was made as a joke.
devourment drums are a lot faster and blast beats constantly changing. Still has parts with quarter note cymbals and 8th/16th note kicks.
knocked loose has a really good hardcore sound and the drummer writes really good drum parts that have a lot of independence.
guttural slug is slam but has a lot of constant double kick slow cymbal parts with snare on 3 or 4. Guttural slug and Devourment are probably the best examples of slam.
Double kick Is important for hardcore and slam as a lot of the time its used as it makes it more aggressive heavier and faster pace rhythm. I practice my double kick technique by playing with a metronome and playing 8th 16th and triplets sometimes while playing cymbals and snare too.
Rudiments are the basic foundation of drumming, and therefore they should be practiced daily. Of course, we can practice them without drums, but we recommend practicing them on a drum set to get used to orchestration , making sure my singles and other patterns are fast and tight also helps fills a lot. The rudiments I’ve been practicing are singles, doubles , paradiddles , paraparadiddles and 6th stroke roll.
Timing is one of if not the most important thing to drums as the drummer needs to always keep time and count the band in making sure everyone else is in time too .I practice my timing by playing everything with a metronome such as rudiments fills and beats and making sure its in time slowly raising the bpm.
hi hat counting is used in a lot of genres it establishes and maintains the musical pulse, acting as a timekeeper for the band and the audience. I’ve been practicing counting 4th notes on my hi hat while playing beats and fills to improve my left foot control.
French grip is known as the main grip for finger control. Drummers mostly use this grip to get to a specific tempo that other grips or wrist can’t achieve its also good for finger technique or developing finger control. ive been practicing my finger technique a bit because if I want to be able to play slam ill need to learn it so I can play faster.
Kick independence allows a drummer to play more complex and creative patterns while maintaining a solid groove. Ive been practicing harder drum beats with 16th note kicks in so I can improve my bass independence which will give me more freedom in creating nice kick patterns for my beats.
Stick height is important for playing dynamically accurate and for playing faster. ive been trying to make sure I don’t raise my stick too high causing it to restrain how fast I can play or so its quieter.
Foot technique for double kick is really important as the wrong or bad technique can heavily limit how fast and how much control you have.I play heel up but I’m trying to build good ankle technique ive had to loosen the spring tension on my pedals and practice my normal double kick stuff to a metronome but slower because my ankle technique isn’t that good yet.
Drum fills add excitement and interest to a song by bridging transitions between sections and providing a moment for the drummer to showcase their creativity. I’m trying to learn more complex drum fills not just rlrlrl around the kit such as adding flams or lrlrlr and adding kick drums in for eg RLK RLRLKK RLKK I make sure to do these with a metronome.
Ghost notes they add rhythmic texture, dynamic control, and groove to a drumbeat, I practice beats with harder ghost note placements and adding complex kick patterns to it too which is helping me have better control and freedom on my ghost notes as well as freedom on where I can place them.
