Songs of Inspiration

When making music, it is important to have songs that you draw to, both for inspiration, and for reference (how a real professional song sounds vs yours.) As far as my music is concerned, there are a long list of songs which I will document here which I draw inspiration from and a few which I used as references for mixes.

Camels – Bou. I like camels purely because of the foghorn noise in the drop. I think it sounds really nicely rounded and has definitely inspired future sound design for me.

Do you like rollers? – Dutta. Again I like the foghorn sound design in the drop of this one, the ambience of the intro too gives a lot of inspiration towards my music.

Speaker of the beast – AC13. I really like how evil this song songs, with the intro having menacing ambiences which I have been influenced by. I also love the vocal on this song it is so eerie in a sense.

Break it down – Mozey. This song is a great just simple jump up song. I love the call and response between the synths in the drop and it overall just gives a nice flow throughout the drop.

Badge flasher VIP – Traumatize. This one is another great one with great call and response between the basses, with some great sound design which has inspired me for sure. The intro ambience is also good with the vocal sample fitting perfectly into the sounds.

Envy – Bou. I like this one because it feels spacious. The foghorn and other bass hits blend really well with both the drum beat used and the vocal sample which just work brilliantly. I also like the way the intro builds up with the lead/arp sound in the background filling up lots of space in the mix.

Wave riders – Serum. The melodies in this song give it such a unique sound that makes it really memorable and crowd friendly, which is what you want from your music. I really like the foghorn that’s used in the drop and I almost replicated it in a song I produced for this project.

Transcend – Tsuki. This is probably my favorite dnb song of all time, I have made so many songs that sound super similar to this one. The influence this has is clear when you listen to the intro of solestis. I love the soundscapes that are cut through with saw basses and the vocal lead sitting on top just makes it all complete.

Pressure – Ben snow. The intro of this song has inspired me a lot. The way the basses are brought in specifically and the vocal sample before the drop is also a great influence on songs I made for this project.

Take you higher – Tsuki. I love the switch up in this song, where the melodic drop synth gets swapped out for what can only be described as a laserbeam attacking you. That idea of switching to the laserbeam I wanted to use but it didn’t sound as good as just having the melodic synth run throughout the drop.

Polarity VIP– Turno. The introduction is the main inspiration I draw from this song. Similar to transcend with the ambiences and basses in the intro. Also the fake drop is something else from this song that I used for inspiration – specifically for solestis.

Lunar eclipse – Visages, strategy. This song is another of my favourite drum and bass songs. The bass on it is just simply immense, and the vocal parts are probably some of the best rapping I have ever heard on a dnb song.

These are by far the most notable songs that I drew inspiration from, and I think if you listen to them all and you listen to what I made for this project, you will hear lots of parallels.
