Event Management

Event Management is simply just the process of planning and organizing an event.

In music, event management is a very important process and without said process we wouldn’t have live music. There are many different roles that fall under the umbrella of event management, live sound, lighting, promotion and marketing, artwork design, logistics, financial management, and many more.

Essentially when you’re working in event management, you are a piece in the puzzle of the event and you contribute accordingly to your role. There are a lot of different factors that need organizing and coordinating like, the booking of the venue, the setup of your equiptment, marketing and promoting the event, health and safety precaution, organizing security and door staff, setting up ticketing, keeping track of time, and finding out a curfew.

My role in event management is the sound engineer and production manager. This means that I will be overseeing everything to do with sound, including setup, packdown, and mixing the bands using the sound desk.

This is a very important role to undertake in event management as it is the absolute bread and butter of a live performance, all the other roles can in theory be discarded but you cant run a performance without sorting out the sound.

As a live sound engineer you need to have good communication and coordination with the band(s), usually you have a sound check with the band(s) beforehand and figure out the sound oriented goals – volume, balance and eq decisions. This helps reduce the work you have to do while the bands are playing. While the bands are playing you will be making live adjustments to the mix, using your ears to make small changes and also preventing channels from clipping and preventing the monitors feeding back.
