Soundboi is the second song I have produced for this project.
This song takes a lot of its influence from dub and reggae as you will be able to hear.
The main focus in this song was the bounce of the drums and the sub. The drums are mostly ones which I have synthesized as well as a couple acoustic kit samples like in my other tunes. I arranged them in a style typical of the genres I took influence from them with the kick being on beats 2 and 4 with the snare on 3 creating a nice floating beat with the sub pulsing underneath. Additionally I added lots of short time delays to the snares which is that iconic dub snare sound we all love (well I love.) All together they sound very good.
The next element is the vocal. I created a chop of the oh and added lots of delay and reverb to it, that is a general theme in this song. It is an important element to the song, if not the most important, and really glues the song together I think.
The horns also add to that reggae dub sound, with the delayed horn creating a nice ambience alongside the other effects I have in this song.
Above here is a video detailing how this song was produced
In conclusion, I am happy with what I have achieved with this song. It is much more dub influenced than tracks I have created in the past and experimenting with new styles can always be challenging, however I think I have grasped the sound of my influence for this song. In the future I will think of ways to add slightly more variance to songs of this style and my major takeaway from this production is that simplicity and groove can sometimes be key with a dubstep song – don’t overproduce.
