Look 1- Gyaru

In between my second project (November – December) and my Final Major Project (mid February – June/July) I created five different looks for my portfolio; these looks aren’t an official graded project but my tutors said that I should make these pages anyway because they will need to see it. I completed three of these looks on myself (with permission from tutors) and two on models.

Context:

For my first look, I will be creating a look inspired by the popular Japanese fashion style “Gyaru” and the colour palette of “U*Sa*Ha*Na” (Usahana), a character from the “Sanrio” brand.

The Gyaru fashion style originated in Japan in the late 1990’s, it was a form of rebellion against the beauty standards in Japan but later developed different styles. I found a brief summary of the history and developments of Gyaru fashion on Pinterest, posted by user “@chromianed”:

This is the character “U*Sa*Ha*Na” that I am using as inspiration for my colour palette. According to the website linked below, that has a lot of information about her, Usahana “is a Sanrio character who is a colourful, lively little girl bunny that loves summer. She was originally designed for women working in the office to colour their desks and soothe their hearts.” This description gave me the idea of a Gyaru look because that too is very colourful and lively.

My plan is to create a traditional Gyaru look with Usahana’s colour palette, style a blonde wig and make the orange flower that Usahana wears to go onto the wig.
