What is consciousness?

The most basic definition of consciousness is when something is aware of its itself, thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. More specifically, object permanence, a (simple) concept of time, and using your senses to benefit yourself, all factor towards being conscious.

However, we know very little about consciousness a it is very difficult to research because there is no true way to find how it evolved, how it is defined, who/what is capable of it, and how the experience of being conscious varies and impacts from person to person. Philosophy, phycology, and neuroscience all have a role in dissecting consciousness.
