Specialist Industry Practice

What is your specialist industry practice?

I want to run my own photography business, running my own studio place to take portraits of people but also having the option for people too book with me and do a shoot in the park or weddings. I don’t actually need to go to university, I just need technical skills, creative skills, business skills, operational skills and additional skills. Technical skills: I need to know how to work a camera, lightning techniques such as the butterfly technique. Also, knowing how to edit on photoshop/ lightroom to retouch the photo or add or delete something out of the photo depending on what the client wants. Creative skills: i need an artistic vision, for example knowing the colour theory, and know how to creatively take photos for example from different angles. I also need to pay attention to details, to make sure all the elements of the photo suits the aesthetic and the message of the photo. Business skills: knowing how to market and brand your company for example, knowing what to name your business. You also have to know how to communicate with your client so that you know exactly what they want, you also need to know to finically manage everything like paying for the electricity of the studio but also having spare money just in case you need more equipment or to repair anything. Operational skills: you need to know how to set up all of the lights, and have a good environment and have a good amount of space around the studio. Problem solving is key to have while helping out clients and to fix up any technical issues. You also need additional skills such as networking: talking to other photographers or companies to share ideas, to communicate. Adaptability: staying up with the trends, and equipment to keep your work nice and fresh.

Herb Ritts:

Herb Riits, didn’t study photography in high school or college, he received a degree in economics with a minor in art history. I like his photos because you can see the emotions clearly in the photos. The first photo looks as if the woman is in distress, upset but also looks serious. On the other hand, the second photo also looks serious but you can see a slight smile, I like how the portraits have a serious but good look in them.

Jasmin Chadwick:

Jasmin Chadwick has a decade of experience on wedding photography, she takes photos in the moment to try and capture their true emotions. She also likes to have the couple/ person in focus rather than the background. The background is just blurry or just not really in focus.

Art galleries:

I went to 2 galleries in Halifax, I mostly found photos of nature, that’s my comfort zone in photography. There were many different types of photos, there was some buildings, landscapes. I took photos of these photographs for them to inspire me, to give me a different view on how to take my photos and how to edit them.

This was the first art gallery it was also a furniture place but i took some photos of the ones I thought looked cool and i could try and recreate them.

Personal statement:

I have chosen this course because I am passionate about it, but also because I want to become a professional photographer. I want to run my own business and take photos of people. Photography excites me because it let’s me express myself. People use poetry, writing, music to express myself and I use photography, it also excites me because I get to see different points of views. People express themselves through different ways of photography and I like to see other’s work so that I can get ideas from their work and maybe even recreate it myself. Photography is relevant to me because I want to do more of it in the future, and make a business in a studio to take photos but also at woods/ parks or even at weddings. I did some experience in college with makeup students taking photos of their makeup looks and hair and body photos too, I think this will help me in the future to show me how to face the camera and help me understand that you can over and over again with photos until you’re the one who likes it because that’s what matters and if the client likes it. I’m proud that I have developed better skills of using the settings on the cameras and have developed a better sense of how to angle the camera better so that you get different outcomes. I’m also proud that I’ve also improved with my editing skills, I can do more now than before such as I can layer photos onto each other in such a way that you can see both. I have skills of knowing how to work a camera, I know how to change the exposure, I know how to change the colour scheme on the camera itself. I also have good techniques of how to get a good photo, usually a low angle and pointing the camera upwards helps and makes the photo look better. I want to run my own photography business, running my own studio place to take portraits of people but also having the option for people too book with me and do a shoot in the park or weddings.
