The concept I chose for the project ‘Fear’ was Nightmares. The photographers who inspired me are Kelly Jean, Christopher McKenney and Jerry Uelsmann. This was because of the creepy, nightmarish nature of their photos and how some of them made me feel. I explored my ideas by thinking of some things that I find scary or have had nightmares about, so I could visualise them and turn them into pictures. I focused on what composite photography was beforehand, looked at what lighting techniques there are to use and carried out a practice (skeleton) shoot. Throughout this project, I feel that all my shoots went well and some- especially the Jerry Uelsmann shoot- turned out better than what I had envisioned. I learned about how detailed planning before shooting is important in composite photography in order to produce successful images in Photoshop. One thing I would do differently next time would be to try out more coloured lighting again somehow- like the colour red.
I think I experimented the most with the Jerry Uelsmann based shoot as I think adding the skull with a skeletal hand coming out of its mouth was one of my best ideas, as it almost looks to be protruding out of the picture to get to the viewer, which can be viewed as nightmarish. This is why I am going to use the final outcome of that shoot as my Final Piece for the Fear project.
