Final Evaluation

At the beginning of the Journey Project, I didn’t really have a clear idea of what I wanted my concept to be, so I carried out some primary research by experimenting with forced perspective, textural rubbing and textural overlaying using a self-made collage. Once I had decided that I wanted my main theme to be based around public transport, I did some secondary research on photographers such as David Gaberle, Nick Turpin, Nicolas Ruel, Nicole Evelyn, Adrian Brannan and David Hockney.

I used techniques such as overlaying, typography, sequences, long exposure and darkroom images using pinhole cameras. The research I did on David Hockney helped me the most in how I wanted to develop and better my work; So much so that I used a Hockney Joiner I created to use for my final exhibition.

Some things that impacted my progress in this project was an unexpected Bradford Bus Station closure as it meant I could not go back there to reattempt and improve a Hockney Joiner that I was in the making of.  I solved this issue by doing the shoot at a bus stop in town instead, which I think made the joiner I was making significantly better than it would have been if it was at the bus station, whilst also fitting my theme perfectly. Another thing that affected my progress during this project was the extremely cold weather as I ,at one point, planned to do a shoot using road signs in the area where I live but had to do it on another later day in a different location due to ice making the ground too slippery.

A new skill that I have developed during this project is learning how to take better photos in different non-studio locations, where I cannot control things like lighting, so I have had to use what was there. I have also learnt how to take higher quality photos faster; Like on my 2nd Hockey Joiner shoot with the bus as I had to work quickly when it got to the stop to take all the photos I required before it left- which I was successful with.

I really enjoyed the Journey Project and I’m extremely happy with the work I have produced and how my final exhibition turned out.
