Returning my focus back to distortion and how memories can be unclear when remembered, I am going to do an experimental shoot similar to the work I did during week 2 of FMP based around Diane Meyer. Meyers work showing the indistinctness of memories was a concept which I enjoyed, so I am going to attempt another shoot with a similar message -but by taking a different approach- using a physical technique instead of a digital one.
Plan
My plan is to place shiny, textured, transparent objects right in front of the lens when I am photographing scenes so some of what is in the frame is covered. Materials I have in mind for this are cling film and a long glass prism. To enhance the effect of these objects being partially in the frame, I am to carry out this shoot on a bright sunny day so the sunlight can shine through and reflect off of the objects. I hope to use these different materials to achieve a dreamy, hazy effect on my images, without having to use any filters when editing in photoshop.
There is nothing in particular I want to photograph for this, as it is just some investigation to see how the light can travel through these objects and how it affects my images.
Shoot

This shoot did not turn out as well as I had hoped. I used the viewfinder of my camera to take these pictures but realised that the images didn’t look as good on screen as they did in real life. The prism acted more like a mirror instead of glass, and I could not achieve the hazy effect I was looking for with the cling film. Because this experimentation was unsuccessful, I will not be considering it as a photographic technique for my Final Piece.
Week 8 & 9 Reflection:
During the eighth and ninth week of FMP I…
- Re-attempted and evaluated the Hannu Huhtamo (light painting) based shoot
- Organised some ideas I have for my final piece
- Experimented by taking pictures with something covering the camera lens
I didn’t like the final result of the covering the lens shoot so next week I am going to carry out more research and experimentations to hopefully decide on which final piece idea I want to stick with.
