Idea 1: Family Tree
So far, the experimentations I have done which interested me the most have been my Photo Essay and Film Souping shoots. Reasons for this are because I really like how they both link to the concept of past vs present and the contrasts between the two. I also genuinely enjoyed focusing my photos around my own family members in the Jason Powell themed shoot as I found it fascinating how time can gradually change things so much.
After reflecting on all of this, an idea I have is to collect real branches to hang my photos on. The photo essay I completed as primary research has inspired me to maybe take photos of my own family members to then use half of their face now to connect with a photo of them taken when they were younger. The final photo with both halves of their face would then be attached to the branches to create a family tree.
Idea 2: Light Trails
To develop from the Hannu Huhtamo based shoot, an idea I have is to take a series of photos and somehow connect them all with simple trails of coloured light, to show how the memories of events can follow on one after the other. The only problem with this proposition is that I have no ideas about what it would be that I would actually photograph and how. This is why I am going to experiment with more photographic techniques to see if I can develop this plan further.
Idea 3: Tunnel Art
I personally think that memories have depth. I believe there can be a memory and then the things linked to it, like feelings, emotions, learning experiences etc. I see these things almost like they are in layers. To illustrate the ‘layers’ of memories, something I am inspired by is 3D pop-up children’s books- with cut-outs in the pages that make it look like looking at the book is like looking down into a tunnel.
If I chose to use this idea, I feel it would require the most materials as I think multiple layers of foam board (with my pictures mounted on them) stacked on top of each other would look the best as a final piece. Foam board would also be the best option for durability purposes.
I am going to do more experimentations as well as artist/photographer research to develop my final piece exhibition ideas further.
