Ashraful Arefin Shoot

The things I used for this shoot in the style of Ashraful Arefin where flowers, a glass jar, a plastic water bottle and a milk jug. My camera was on a tripod the whole time and after taking some practice images, I decided to use the shutter priority setting on my camera to freeze the movement of the water.

It was already cloudy and raining a bit while I was photographing but I wanted to make it look like it was raining harder so I used the same technique Arefin used; By pouring water from a milk jug into the bottom of a plastic water bottle with holes in and shaking it. I used the self-timer on my camera and repeated this method in different ways to get different effects.

f/4 1/1600 sec.

To edit this photo, I created a composite by combining 3 different images. This was because I wanted the background to be even more blurred than it actually was. I started off by selecting the flowers and table and layering them on top of an empty out-of-focus image I had taken of just the background at the end of my shoot. I then selected as many water droplets as I could to then add to the image. I also added two blurry flowers by using a photo I had taken while holding them close to the camera lens. I feel this added more depth to my photo, like in some of Ashraful Arefin’s work. Finally, I altered the white balance, colour balance, vibrance and saturation to make the picture have a warm tone. In my opinion, I think this made the colour of the flowers stand out a bit more.

Overall, I am really proud of this shoot as I think it turned out perfectly, especially because it really does look like it was raining heavily, even though it wasn’t.
