Library Research

I went to the David Hockney library to do some research and look for ideas related to dreams.

A page from the book ‘Photography Past Forward: Aperture at Fifty’ by R.H. Cravens:

The photographer who took these images is called Pierre et Gilles. I found this information in a book called ‘Photography Past Forward: Aperture at Fifty’ written by R.H. Cravens.

What drew me to these images was how they were both set out and presented on the page. I think these is are fine art portraits with a theme of broken glass or mirrors. There are a lot of warm colours with light that creates dark shadows. I think the photographer may have first taken the portraits of the people, then took the pictures of broken glass separately and edited them both together to get the final image.

Pages from the book ‘Art and Photography’ by David Campany:

This set of photos was taken by a photographer called Robert smithson. He took these 9 different pictures of different natural settings during the day, in a square format and presented them as a 3×3 grid.

Each location has a number of square shaped mirrors somewhere in the image making me think that these photos fall into the fine art genre. The concept of these photos could be how mirrors can cause distortion as the random reflective squares can sometimes make the picture confusing to look at.

This image was taken by Georges Rousse, a French photographer painter and installation artist. I was drawn to this image because of the many different bright colours in perfect squares, making the photo seem chaotic and organised all at the same time. Dreams can sometimes be like this.

This picture actually didn’t have to include a lot of post processing because the man who took it is also a painter and installation artist, so he had managed to use perspective and paint the squares himself.
