University

I started looking at potential universities in August and September. At the moment, I have only attended Huddersfield University open days. I attended twice on the 28th of October, where I looked at the music courses available, and again on the 23rd of November, to look at other aspects of the university, including disability support.

Choices

After looking at the courses, I prefer the music technology courses

Huddersfield University.

  • Music Technology and Composition BMus(Hons)
  • Sound Engineering and Music Production BSc(Hons)
  • Creative Music Production BA(Hons)
  • Music and Sound for Screen BA(Hons)

The courses are 3 or 4 years, including a placement year.

Entry Requirements
BBB-BCC A Level
104 – 120 UCAS Points
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music DDM – DMM

Other university course options

  • Leeds Becket University BA(Hons) Music Production 3/4 Yrs 112 UCAS Points
  • Leeds Conservatoire- BA (Hons) Music Production 3 Yrs – 96 UCAS Points
  • Leeds Art University BA (Hons) Music Production 3/4 Yrs 104-120 UCAS Point
  • ICMP Leeds – BA (Hons) Creative Music Production Degree 3 Yrs 80 UCAS Points

All the above have similar courses I am interested in with entry requirements from 80-120 UCAS Points.

Current Study

UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production

I have looked at the UCAS points for the UAL extended diploma-
Pass – 72
High Pass – 96
Merit – 120
High Merit – 144
Distinction – 168
To be accepted on the above courses, I need a Merit or Higher, which stresses me out as I haven’t looked at other course options at other universities.

While looking around the university, I signed up for Headstart, which allows me to earn 8 UCAS points by writing. A 500-1000 word self-reflection based on my experience of primary HE research carried out at a University of Huddersfield Open Day.

I obtained a Merit in my first year and hope to maintain or increase that standard.

Support

The key for me from the university is support for a disability as I have autism. Additional support has been vital both at school and college, and I was not sure what options were available if I went to university as my EHCP would no longer be valid. When I revisited Huddersfield on the 23rd of November, I was keen to look at support options, and the university helped point me to disability student award that I could apply for from Student Finance England, as funds can be used to pay for Non-Medical help and also an extension on submissions of assignments. I have only reviewed Huddersfield University’s support and will look at other universities to see what support they offer.
