Journey: Primary Research

My first assignment was to go on an adventure and to take pictures along the way. I attempted to convey a story with my pictures that would make a fair bit of sense to practice creating the elements of a journey.

This first journey went very well. In half an hour, I was able to take 26 pictures and bring it down to a 10 picture adventure. I chose to shoot the pictures in portrait because when people take pictures and videos on their phone, it tends to be in portrait and a phone feels more personal than a camera. I continued this throughout my second shoot, which is below.

My seconds shoot went even better, I was able to create a functioning storyline of the slow mental degeneration of a man exploring a seemingly abandoned building. I was able to use the limited resources and areas to create this and make it look convincing with use of various camera techniques, semiotic imaging and little to no editing. These techniques included portrait mode to make the hallways seem more claustrophobic, the textured layering of an air vent to look like metal bars keeping the man trapped in his own mind and the low camera angle in a dark room to make the room look much bigger and more mysterious.
