{"id":839,"date":"2024-09-11T14:15:39","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T13:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitalspace.bradfordcollege.ac.uk\/10678419\/?page_id=839"},"modified":"2024-09-22T14:40:04","modified_gmt":"2024-09-22T13:40:04","slug":"health-and-safety-as-makeup-artist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/digitalspace.bradfordcollege.ac.uk\/10678419\/health-and-safety-as-makeup-artist\/","title":{"rendered":"Health and Safety as a Makeup Artist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legislation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m going to research health and safety legislation and how it applies to the makeup industry so I can keep clients and myself safe and if any accidents occur, I&#8217;ll know how to properly deal with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health and Safety at Work act 1974<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All businesses have to comply with the HSWA to ensure the health and safety of clients and workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employer&#8217;s health and safety duties are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensuring the way of working is safe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making sure the workplace is clean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The equipment being used is clean and safe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carrying out risk assessments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Informing employees of any risks related to the job (since I&#8217;ll most likely be working as a self-employed freelance makeup artist this doesn&#8217;t apply to me as much but I&#8217;ll have to research all potential risks myself).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There should be an appointed person to oversee health and safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employers should speak with workplace health and safety reps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there&#8217;s a union the employer should set up a workplace safety committee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There should be adequate facilities for the welfare of staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the responsibilities are for the employer, but employees have a basic duty of care and since I&#8217;ll be self employed I need to know both the duties of the employer and employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employees&#8217; responsibilities are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Employees should take care of their own health and safety as well as colleagues&#8217; health and safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employees shouldn&#8217;t interfere with things put in place to maintain health and safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Report of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RIDDOR ensures that accidents and dangerous incidents in the workplace are reported to a health and safety executive. An example of this in the beauty or makeup industry would be if a client had an allergic reaction, it should be reported to prevent it occurring again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COSHH ensures safety when using hazardous substances and materials. Breaching COSHH is a crime that results in an unlimited fine. Lots of people work with potentially hazardous substances, including makeup artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Substances included in COSHH regulations are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hazardous liquids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazardous solids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fumes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fibres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nano- Particles (not particularly relevant to makeup industry)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viruses and bacteria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hazards included in COSHH are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lung damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skin damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genetic damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damage to internal organs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risk of injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CNS damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damage to eyes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damage to nose or mouth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health and Safety Regulations 1981<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Health and Safety Regulations act ensures that someone trained in fist aid is on the premises at all times to deal with any accidents. If IPA isn&#8217;t available, washing up liquid can also be used to disinfect brushes and disinfectant wipes can also be used for work surfaces or mirrors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sanitise hands. Re-sanitise if you touch your own hair or face.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decant products onto a palette (or back of sanitised hand) with a spatula before putting them onto the client&#8217;s face.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t use mascara wands, liquid liners or lipsticks from the tube. Use a disposable spoolie or lip wand instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sharpen pencil liners before and after each use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tie your hair up to keep it away from the client&#8217;s face.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask client if they have any allergies or skin conditions that they know about before applying products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform patch tests before working on a client to see if they&#8217;re allergic to products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask client to close their eyes and put your hand in front of their eyes before spraying anything towards their face.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use heat protection before using electrical appliances on the client&#8217;s hair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check if the client or anyone else nearby has asthma or other breathing problems before using hair spray. Use gel spray instead if anyone does have breathing problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove hair from hair brushes after use. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put a heat protection mat on the work surface before turning an electrical appliance on to avoid damaging the work surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure any heated appliances have cooled down before putting them away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy fragrance free skincare to avoid allergic reactions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure there&#8217;s enough space around your station so people can walk through without getting hurt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep bags\/coats in cupboards or hang them up so people don&#8217;t fall over them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid bending too much to avoid back problems later in life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Legislation I&#8217;m going to research health and safety legislation and how it applies to the makeup industry so I can keep clients and myself safe and if any accidents occur, I&#8217;ll know how to properly deal with them.
