My character, Mary is described as both a chav and alternative. I’ve interpreted this as she’s someone who’s more alternative but still cares a lot about fitting in so still styles herself more like a chav but with more alternative elements.
I’ve talked with my actor, Aamna, and we’ve decided that Mary is going to be emo so the way I’m planning on combining that with typical chav makeup is making the makeup more toned down emo, with messy eyebrows instead of the typical block brows of chav makeup, smudging the eyeliner, making her slightly paler but with warmer undertones similar to the orange foundation used for chav makeup, and straightening her hair.

Face chart
I struggled with finding the right balance between emo and alternative makeup for the face chart. I think it reads a lot more chavvy than I wanted it to. I sent it to my actor. I was originally planning on straightening her hair and creating a side part inspired by stereotypical emo hairstyles, but she was worried about it getting in her eyes and her performance being affected which was a reasonable concern, so I’ll just straighten her hair instead.
I’m filling in for Sophie Taylor at Undercliffe cemetery, so I’ll be following her face chart on the day. For the hair she said she wanted it to be slightly messy so I’ll use gel to get that look.
