Project 1 hair practicals

Intro to hair

We were told to get a wig head and do a style we were confident with. iI chose to section the hair into hot cross buns and then do something else with it but I hadn’t decided what. The sectioning went well and I finished it relatively fast so I then decided to curl it. I sprayed the hair with heat protection and used a curling iron. I struggled with the curls because it’s been a long time since I last curled hair and I didn’t even get a full section done.

I think to improve I mainly need to practice with curling and also styling in general so I can do it faster and not have to redo the curls.

Blow drying

I used water spray to completely wet the hair before blow drying. I then parted sectioned it into hot cross buns. I then started blow drying in layers. I struggled with using both hands and using the round brush to keep the hair flat. I struggled to use the right motion and accidentally used the same motion I’d use if I was doing a roller set. In the future I’ll try to work faster and practice more to get used to using both hands.

Curling with straighteners

I really struggled with using the straightener to curl hair. I got a lot of help from Shazia but still struggled with keeping the hair in the straightener and twisting it to make the curl. We then combed out the curls, making it innto more of a wave which went ok. I’m not happy with how it went at all. I’m going to watch tutorials and practice to improve.

Assessment hairstyle practice

I practiced the spiky bun half updo shown in my designs on Monday, following the video below. I didn’t follow it exactly and instead did a middle parting and not all the hair was tied into the bun.

I sectioned the hair similar to hot cross buns, but left the bottom of the hair in 1 section instead of parting all the way down the middle. I also made the spikes a lot bigger and sharper than the person in the video because hers was more for a day-to-day look whereas mine is for a more editorial shoot so it needs to have more impact. I did straighten the bottom of the hair but I don’t think it really changed much and just ended up adding to the time it took.

I think for the actual assessment, I’ll make the bun a lot bigger because the spikes coming out were too big and they were difficult to control so I ended up using a lot of gels, gel spray and hairspray. I also think I’ll make it slightly more messy since I’ve said I want the final look to be messy and this felt too perfect with how neat the bun and spikes were. The spikes were also falling a bit, which I think was due to them being so long.
