Character Research- Tigris Snow

Tigris in The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, played by Hunter Schafer. Hair and Makeup by Sherri Berman Laurence. Costume designed by Trish Summerville.

Physical Appearance

In the book A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Tigris is described as ‘no great beauty’. However, it should be noted that the book is in 3rd person but describes the thoughts of Coriolanus Snow, who is shown to be untrustworthy throughout the book/film. He often looks down on other people and is shown to be quite arrogant, so it would fit his characterisation to dismiss the ‘beauty’ of his older cousin. She is described as having a ‘long, pointed nose, and a skinny body, as well as golden brown eyes’. I will use this in my look by making my model’s facial features appear sharper. By the time of the Second Rebellion in Mockingjay, Tigris had had extensive surgeries to appear like a cat, including tattoos over her face and body that look like tiger stripes, as well as getting surgeries to flatten her nose and getting whiskers implanted. Even though Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set 64 years before the original Hunger Games trilogy and Tigris hadn’t yet had any of those surgeries yet, I want to use the idea of cat- like features in my look for the project, although I’ve not yet figured out how. Just like her cousin Coriolanus Snow, she has platinum blonde hair, so I plan on either using a model with blonde hair or using a wig.

Personality and Background

Tigris is shown to be empathetic and cares about others deeply. She’s against the Hunger Games overall and believed that they were a harsh punishment from the Capitol to the districts. Tigris showed sympathy towards Lucy Gray Baird (District 12’s tribute in the 10th Hunger Games), and suggested Coriolanus went to meet her at the train station when she arrived in the Capitol.

Tigris was part of the snow family, one of the richest families in The Capitol before the first rebellion, but the family fell into poverty when their laboratories in district 13 were destroyed. Her parents died at an unknown time before the Dark Days, so she lived with her grandmother and Coriolanus, who she often referred to as Coryo. She was the main carer in the Snow household from the age of 8 after Coriolanus’ parents died and the family couldn’t afford cooks. She was a student at the Academy, but didn’t move on to University so she could pursue fashion.

How Tigris’ hair and makeup was created for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Tigris’ makeup, along with the rest of the characters, was designed by Sherri Berman Laurence, and her hair was designed by Nikki Gooley. In an interview about the film, Sherri Berman Laurence said that “Tigris’s character was fresh faced but also fashion forward”. Ombre lips and blush were used to create the character’s makeup, as well as bleaching and plucking actress Hunter Schafer’s eyebrows in a ‘catlike point’, she said in an Instagram post.

Costume

Tigris’ costume was designed by Trish Summerville, who was also the costume designer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay parts 1 and 2. The costumes were inspired by post-war America in the 1940s and 50s.

For Tigris, Summerville designed a Balenciaga- inspired skirt and structural jacket. To help showcase the financial struggles of the Snow family, Summerville and her team sewed the seams on the outside and frayed the edges to give the impression that Tigris had repurposed the clothes.
