Week by Week Evaluations

No Makeup Makeup

We practiced no makeup makeup because in film and TV, makeup should focus on making the actor’s skin look clean and smooth, as well as correcting any discolouration. I was modelling for Alexia during the lesson and had no time once she was done so I practiced at home instead.

I’m not happy with how it looked. It was clear that there was makeup on my face and I think that I used too much powder because it looked quite pale.

Heated Rollers

In Monday’s lesson, we were shown how to use heated rollers. Heated rollers are used to curl hair. Hot rollers take a lot less time than velcro rollers which is more efficient when on set.

Jasmin did a demo on how to use them. I took photos and made notes during the demo to help me when its came to practicing later.

I redid the rollers twice because I was struggling to get them to go down the head in a straight line and ran out of time because of this. At first I used the pins to secure the rollers but I tried out the clips and found them more helpful.

In the next lesson, we practiced on each other.

I managed to do them faster than the first time on the doll head, but I still didn’t get a full set.

Dirty Down

I practiced dirtying down. There wasn’t any dirt left so Assia showed me how to mix different eyebrow powders with vaseline to make a paste then use a stipple sponge to apply it so it looks like dirt. Dirtying down is mainly used in special effects for film and tv. I was happy with the final look but it would have been better if the dirt was thicker.

Male Grooming

We had a demo from Lisa showing grooming for men. This is used in many parts of the industry, but Lisa was mainly showing it for film and TV. Grooming is important for film and TV because it helps to showcase who the character is and their circumstances. For example, if someone has clear skin and is well shaved, the audience will likely assume the character is at a good place in life and takes care of themself. However, if a character is poorly groomed, it can make them look messy and that they are unable/ don’t care enough to look after themself properly. A character might not be groomed if they are meant to be ill, for example.

These are the notes I made during the demo:
