History of Foundation
The first foundations were used in ancient Greece and Rome. These foundations were made with white lead and was mainly used to make the skin lighter. However, white lead is highly poisonous and can cause fatigue, weight loss, vomiting, abdominal pain, hearing loss, constipation, high blood pressure, headaches, pain, miscarriage or premature birth if the user is pregnant, joint and muscle pain and memory loss. Despite the side effects, white lead continued to be used until the 1800s. Appearing pale was popular because it represented class and wealth since poor people would mainly be working outside and becoming tanned due to sun exposure, whereas the rich didn’t have to go outside and be in the sun.
In the 1800s
More modern foundations started in theatre with greasepaints.
