Project 3

Research- Tv roles

Director

Directors are the creative leaders in charge of the whole production. They hold the creative vision throughout the whole process. They are employed by the executive producer or producer, who is ultimately in charge of a production. Directors start with a script, and work with a screenwriter and sometimes a script editing team. It’s not uncommon for the director to be the screenwriter as well.

Responsibilities:

  • They work with the producers and casting directors to select the actors to develop the filming style, including notes about camera shots and script changes.
  • The director will also be instructing other members of the crew, especially lighting.
  • They ensure that all the technical aspects are in place to get a good show filmed

Equipment:

  • The director will mainly have storyboards (essentially comic-style breakdowns of shot selections)
  • Shot list
  • Directors view finder
  • DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex)
  • Monitor
  • Light Meter
  • Annotated Script

Specialist Vocabulary:

Vocabulary that directors use are mainly words like “camera 1 ” “camera 2” etc, or “tell camera 1 to move slightly to the right/left/up/down.

Floor Manager

The floor manager is the eyes and ears of the director on the studio floor. In a studio production, floor managers hold safety briefings before rehearsals start. If there’s an audience, they work with audience services to make sure everyone is seated in good time. They are there before rehearsals begin to make sure the studio is prepared and safe. If good at their job, the floor manager will be ahead pf the director, managing with cameras, lighting and sound to make sure each sequence is ready to rehearse.

Responsibilities:

  • To attend planning meetings: Floor Managers attend these so that they have an understanding of the programme, so that they know the ins and outs of the programme and they’re aware of their job and and the orders been given by the director.
  • To read through the script of the programme: They read the script as it is important that the Floor Manager is aware of the cast and what they are saying in case of a mess up. This is so they know when a mistake has been made to fix it.
  • To check the equipment is working before the show: It is important that this is done because if the equipment isn’t working and it hasn’t been checked before hand then the cast and crew won’t be able to shoot their show.
  • Rehearse live shows: This is important that live shows are practiced as something could go wrong whilst streaming live so rehearsing before-hand is important to get things as perfect as the director or host wants it.
  • relay instructions from the control room to the studio floor using a talkback system: This is important as communication is key especially with a job so practical and hands on, this helps the floor manager communicate with the hosts and the guests without speaking and interrupting the stream (giving hand signals)

Equipment:

  • Microphones and earpieces: to communicate with the director and the crew in the control room.
  • Manages all the equipment on set

Importance of this role:

It is important to be very organised within this role as its important for increasing the productivity of the workplace. This cannot be attained without being organized, as the floor manager is working with multiple interfaces and has to be in control. Therefore, a floor manager needs to be highly organized to deliver the best results. Doing this will save time and also generate better results too. The job of a floor manager is anything but easy, as they carry out most of the important activities to ensure that everything works smoothly. A floor manager has to perform a various set of important duties to meet the goals of the organisation Although floor managers are extremely important in every industry, their significance in the media industry holds a bit more value. This is because of their interpersonal and communication skills. Their ability to understand and communicate well with people makes them an integral part of the media and filmed productions industry, since you have multiple complex interfaces that have to be coordinate perfectly.

Video Journalist

Video Journalists provide creative editorial input to the running order of bulletins. They produce articles and other content to agreed standards for digital publication and generate ideas for stories/features and follow leads from a variety of sources.

Responsibilities:

A Video Journalist is responsible for creating video content and to undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. They use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.

Equipment:

  • Video Camera~ A Video Camera is the basis equipment in videography.
  • Tripod~ To keep the camera sturdy when filming~ useful when shooting static videos.
  • Camera Lighting~ A camera light can help highlight focus subjects or dark spots. Lights are also a useful accessory when filming interviews or documentaries. A light reflector can be useful in improving the quality of the videos.
  • Microphones~ Even if the camera comes with a built-in microphone, a stand-alone one can give a higher quality of video audio. Having a microphone ensures to capture all necessary sounds when filming
  • Video Editing Software~ Once finished capturing videos, the Video Journalist needs a good video editing software program. They also need a good computer to store the data and videos. There are a lot of options available and the best one for them will depend on their type of editing.

Importance of this role:

TV journalism encourages the viewers to have a sense of community among them, by broadcasting the same information to everyone in the country at the same time, so that they can live together with peace and harmony in the nation.

Pre-Production

My idea.

My idea was to do a comedy talk show asking different people questions about different topics like movies, food, culture, etc. I also had an idea of a game show, to get guests on camera to go against each other in a challenge answering different questions about different topics.

Group ideas.

Together we came up with the idea of a talk show and to have an interview with musicians and other guests. The presenters (Henry & Meher ) will be interviewing people from other courses like performing arts and music. Henry and Meher changed the idea of a musical guest to have them self perform a song together in the studio. The show will have different sections: One section will include an interview. Within the interview our presenters (Henry and Meher) will be chatting about Bradford. They will be talking about the food , culture and what could be changed about Bradford. Then they will be answering questions that had been sent in from the public. We had an idea to go around and ask the people of the bradford public what food restraunts they would recommend and try them to give our opinions on their suggestions.

Today is the 19th of jan and we have planned our roles and what we are going to film. We have planned the order of our show and we have thought about the script and what we are going to say within the whole talk show.

As a group we have decided to not to do the food tasting idea as we realised that none of us would have the money to buy the different food the public suggest. We have decided to go out in Bradford city and interview the public of Bradford on their views about their city instead. We believe this will be a better option and probably be much more entertaining.

We decided that the street interview will be filmed before we film the show in the studio. We will be using a microphone and a camera to record on the streets and then we will play the footage during the talk in the studio.

Henry and Meher will be doing the studio interview.

We then changed the plan of inviting musical guests to the idea of having the brilliant ‘lil poodle'(Henry) perform a collaboration alongside our other host. Meher. We thought this idea would be easier as Meher and Henry both have experience in the music industry as they both create their own music.

Our second section will include us going out in Bradford and interviewing the public on their favourite fast food restaurants. After getting few recommendations we will go to a restaurant and try some food. We will be vlogging this section using a camera and microphone.

The music at the end will be a song created by our interviewers Henry and Meher. They have recorded their song and edited it on garage band.

Floor Plan

This is our schedule we are using for the whole production as a whole.

We used the Studio a lot to practice for the recording beforehand. This practicing technique really helped us to understand the surroundings of our environment in the studio and how to communicate as a hard working team. Using the Studio for practice was also useful, as it really helped us discuss about our ideas for the show in a more clear way and decided each of our roles as a team.

We then started to brainstorm the idea of the name and the logo for the show. At first we started with a simple logo, but we soon realised as the group that it didn’t reach our goal of creativity we wanted for the show.

Meher had the idea of making a better logo which we all decided would be best. This logo Meher designed, made us all come to the decision that this logo would fit the brand of our show much better.

Post Production

director, Shumona was the vision mixer. As well as being the presenter alongside Meher, Henry also edited the whole show together, adding the applause and laughing sounds in the background to complete the illusion of a live show.

Although everyone worked together as a team, we all had different responsibilities, especially with editing and brining all the footage together.

When it came to the actual production of the project we had made a few changes to what we planned.

Mckenzie thought of the amazing idea of using a time lapse of Bradford City park changing from day to night. I had the pleasure of getting this from youtube so i could edit it in the introduction graphics with the logo.

This then meant that we would have had to change the logo to have a transparent background so we could blend the time lapse and the logo together.

I then created and edited the intro graphics and the ending credits using my phone on a programme called Video Star. I took the time lapse video of Bradford City park and used it for the background of the intro as we planned.

Whilst the intro music started with the build up i made the background blury with a pixelated effect and faded it out as the video started. I thought this was a good quality for the production as it shows the movement and creativity of the camera illusion.

I then zoomed the logo into the background on the beat of the track.

I then added text saying “live from bradford college studios” when henry says it in the intro and the cast of the show. I added a purple and blue overlay to the text to give it an aesthetic effect to the intro.

Nearer to the end of the intro, when the voice over says “this is bradford tv” i overlayed the city park background into the logo. I faded it from being behind the logo to being inside the logo using a warpy inflater effect to add a warpy creative mood to the intro.

For the credits i wrote everyone’s roles and the parts that were edited and made the whole text move up the screen with a blank background over the intro music created by henry.

Here is the final thing of the intro and credits. F or the credits we used the music from the opening, which was a good idea to use repetitively so the audience gets used to the and remember it in future preferences.

For the street interview, we thought it was a good idea to have the hosts (Meher & Henry) to wear suits, to show more of a professional appearance to grab the publics attention. This surprisingly worked as i personally thought that we wouldn’t grab the attention of anyone for them to stop and answer our questions. Filming the street interview helped with communication skills and teamwork as it made us feel more confident together as a group to talk to different people of the public.

The street interview will be played from the studio in the middle of the tv show. Henry edited the street interview.

Henry created the track for the intro using garage band which is used in the intro graphics and the ending credits. Henry also edited the street interview using IMovie, which brought a comedic side to the interview as he zoomed in on peoples faces when they said something relevant or random to make it funny and more entertaining which worked as when we played it back he couldn’t stop replaying the video over and over.

Meher and Henry also made a song for their live performance and their used garage band for the track and recorded themselves singing.

As well as having the role as the floor manager i also managed all three cameras on set as we were short on team members. It would have helped with a camera crew as i was stressing my self out moving from one camera to another. But on the other hand it helped with my communication and navigation skills, the experience helped me get used to my environment around me with the different usage of equipment.

Here is the final production of the show

Reflection

In my opinion, the project as a whole was successful as we all worked together as a team with different roles to get the project done sufficiently. This was successful as we all had different responsibilities within our roles but we also took the responsibility of different roles as Henry edited the show to add the live effect so it was realistic that it was in front of an actual live audience, and also as a floor manager i took the role of being the camera crew and creating the graphics. The production could have been improved if we had more team members to contribute as camera crew. It also could have used better camera directions and more focus. Better camera quality would have been an improvement as it was out of focus and too zoomed in.

The group as a whole had feedback about what we succeeded in our roles and what we could have improved on.

The feedback i was given was very considerate as they said that i was stressing out whilst working with all 3 cameras as i was in a warm environment and dealing with 3 different jobs independently. I agree with this as it would have been better for the presenters as it was difficult to not react to my stress behind the camera and stay in character. Next time i should keep t in mind to try and destress myself and make sure i’m on schedule with my duties and to make sure that i’m always focused.

Presenting the project to the rest of the college course had me and the whole of team A feeling nervous, but also curious to see what the other groups in our course thought about our masterpiece. In my opinion, our group had the most applause and positive feedback in the whole course.

Feedback 1.

This feedback said we had a rating 9/10 for production value, as they thought the show was funny and interesting and had great communication skills. For improvement it said that the background laughter was edited and used too often. I agree with this as the communication skills between henry and meher are natural and had a free flowing vibe to it. On the other-hand i feel like the background laughter and clapping makes the whole show better, it highlights the idea of i a show performed in front of a live audience.

Feedback 2.

I agree with this feedback as it did have comedy parts in which i agree did help with entertainment. I also agree and disagree with the improvement statement as the wind did mess up the audio and it could have been better, but there wasnt really anything we could do anything about the weather.

Feedback 3.

This feedback was given by one of my friends as she watched the show and FaceTimed me to answer the feedback questions.

Which other shows was this comparable to? – the late late show because of the transition from the studio footage to the street interview footage.

In terms of production value, rate /10. – 7/10 because the quality wasn’t perfect as the cameras were kind of out of focus throughout the broadcast.

Terms of entertainment, rate /10- 8/10 because it was funny and entertaining to watch.

Whats your favourite part of the show?- The comedic element of having a conversation with a dog.

What could be improved? – The focus of the camera, presenters looking at the right camera pointed at them. Better transitioning to the street interview.

I agree with this feedback as she made her point clear and i agree that we could have improved a lot more with the focus and movement of the cameras.

For my next project i will take from this one that i should make sure cameras are all in focus and set up correctly before production as this was the biggest downfall of this project. Next time i will be taking the ability i have learnt to be aware of new surroundings and work spaces and how to communicate as a team. I will also make sure i don’t get too overwhelmed and worked up with my self as it could cause team members to stress out and get overwhelmed too.

Overall i think this project for Team A was a success and it also helped us to communicate as a team and listen to one another’s ideas and decisions within production. I think all of us could take from the this is not too get stressed and overthink things, and too also not leave things at last minute and panic everything in two days.

I confirm that the attached assessment is all my own work and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself and sources have been appropriately referenced.
