I learnt my part on bass for I’ll Be Missing You by following the tab below. https://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/puff-daddy-ill-be-missing-you-bass-tab-s16031
I changed my part in ways to enhance the energetic feeling by matching most root notes with the drum’s kick and and playing a different part during the chorus, which looked like this:
For Gangsta’s Paradise, I mostly learnt by ear using the original recording:
I looked at some covers such as these two below:
Then, I decided to play a mix of both with some personal additions. Below is a simple score of what I played.
I chose to variate it like this in order to keep focused during the performance and offer help to other band members by clearly defining the structure by which section I’m playing. Plus, I found that during rehearsals, it sounded good paired with the drum’s kick as it gave a more impactful effect.
Having a week to complete Zombie, the focus was on teaching Tom the bass part and learning the lyrics. I had listened to the song hundreds of times before the show so I knew how the lyrics were performed, but I still had some confusion as to what words change at different points. I visualised this by sectioning parts like this:
I still used the original song to guide me and looked into harmony which would have been performed if we had time, but the nerves and inexperience prevented me from doing that. If I was to do it again, I would ask for both of us singers to be louder on the monitor speakers and to have separate rehearsals to plan harmony.
