The majority of my time rehearsing was spent on adjusting and perfecting the bass parts in each section. In the below videos I’m practicing the verse section. I had a phase where I’d spend my free time going over the parts I wrote to make sure I could record them properly but tended not to record me rehearsing since I’m not comfortable being recorded.
This rehearsal didn’t go particularly well, I was still figuring out the timing and pattern. I think I was deciding between playing a note at the end of the beat or at the start without noticing.
As I was tired in both recordings, my playing overall was poor and there was too much noise caused by the pressure I put on the strings against the fretboard.
This rehearsal was more organised as I had figured out where to place the note and I played more carefully. I was happy with most of the recordings I took while rehearsing along with the metronome and demo track but I recorded it properly later on in the studio with a different bass to create a cleaner, less buzzy sound.
Rehearsing drums was done a day before we started recording and during the first day of when we were trying to record, as well as in instrumental lessons, since we couldn’t get a take that we could agree on and didn’t have enough time beforehand due to being behind as a result of the Italy project.
Since there are too many parts to the song and not enough people, we couldn’t do full run throughs without blocks of silence and losing track of where we are. It was preferable for both of us to record and rehearse in different ways, Cody recording in one long take as to avoid awkward cuts and me recording sections separately due to the use of many different tones. Because of this, our rehearsals looked different.
Cody often practiced alongside the demo track with a metronome to get the hang of the timing and structure, while I rehearsed different sections at different times in my free time.
