I was looking at doing specific 8-bit game music research, how 8-bit music was composed as in on what technology or software and who were some famous game music composers from the time of 8-bit. There were avenues to look into, like case studies on certain games and their music or how game has evolved over time to be what it is now and why the technology available was a huge part of why the sound of games changed.
More specifically, I was thinking about looking into the evolution of Doom’s music from the initial game, to the smaller spin-off games from the same company to the Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal music.
Alternatively, I wanted to look at ambient game music and why that works with some games and how you decide that ambient music is a good pathway for a game. Why does minecraft music work so well with the game? Do games like night in the woods have the same effect? What are some shared qualities between these types of games?
I could have done a deep dive into the evolution of minecraft’s music, from C418 to the 2018 caves and cliffs update and any additions that came with that and any since then. I found sources to look into this, but I decided afterwards that this wasn’t making me excited to do an essay, and I needed that to happen at the time.
