Evaluation:
All in all, I would say the main positive from this project is that my cover is accurate structurally and melodically, and the level at which I am performing at on guitar while recording is sufficient for this song. I think I chose well to create a comfortable project but could have definitely pushed myself more.
The take-away that I got from this project was the ability to record with more confidence and accuracy, as well as less anxiety when going for takes. This will benefit me in future when I continue building an online portfolio. Another benefit to this project is that I got to experiment with mixing more, so I know my way around certain tools more and feel more comfortable trying to make up techniques as I go along just to see if they work. I’m also more open to trying tried and true techniques for mixing drums and guitar in particular if I am to do similar style songs.
As I hadn’t recorded video when I was recording takes for guitar, I had to mime playing and use that for the video side of the project. This is due to my focus not being able to be split between a good video and a good audio recording. I would say that the video is believable but does have some errors, like the top left guitar strumming too early as I changed the count-in to an offbeat due to the intro drums stopping suddenly. I could have made a separate file with just the guitar to mime along to.
My mix sounds okay as everything is well balanced and nothing is too muddy, but I could have really brought out that 1979 guitar tone if I had used a proper recording space, whether it be an external studio or if I got a rare opportunity to use the college studio undisturbed.
My video editing does the job, despite how basic it is. Everything is in sync which is the main focus and each video is spaced reasonably. I am happy that I chose this format in particular as I believe this will really help with building an online portfolio in future in a similar fashion.
The main downside to this project is that I didn’t get a decent take of me playing drums, as I really wish I had a video to put in the bottom right to level it out and display my progress.
